Why, When, and How to Visit

If there was a Top Ten list of reasons people decide to enroll at St. Olaf, reason No. 1 we hear time and again is: “When I visited the campus, I just felt like I belonged.”

Why visit?

So much of a great college experience is about finding a school that fits your interests and personality. When you visit St. Olaf, you’ll have a chance to talk with students and faculty, tour our incredible facilities, and meet with an admissions officer.

As you’ll see, it is a beautiful campus, and the people here really are friendly.

You can shape your visit to cover just about any question you might have. Here’s why that’s important: the more information you have, the better decisions you’ll make about which college will offer you the best opportunities. That ought to be worth a few hours of your time.

When should you visit?

People have different kinds of questions at different points in the college search, so you might want to visit early, visit later, or visit after you’ve applied and been admitted. Maybe all three. We offer special visit programs tailored to the interests, questions and concerns of students at each of these points.

We also welcome individual visitors year-round. In general, it’s better to visit when school is in session so you can sit in on classes, arrange an overnight, and meet with professors. But if that doesn’t fit your family’s schedule, then simply plan to visit when it’s convenient. The Admissions Office is open year-round (except on major holidays). Check our Visit Calendar to see what activities are available on specific dates.

Individual Visit

Individual visits are offered throughout the year. We ask that visitors register before coming to campus so that we may provide the best possible experience. Go to our Visit Calendar and select the date for your intended visit, or call the Admissions Office (800-800-3025) to set up your visit.

Below are some of the most common things students and their families do while visiting campus:

  • Tour campus (duh)
  • Meet our admissions staff
  • Meet our faculty (limited during the summer)
  • Attend a class (limited during the summer)
  • Enjoy a meal in Stav Hall
  • Use our athletic facilities (make sure to fill out the waiver)

Group Visit Programs

The Admissions Office gladly welcomes groups of students who are in or entering 10th through 12th grades to visit campus. During a group visit you may take a tour and meet with a member of the Admissions team to learn more about St. Olaf. Group visits are offered during weekday business hours and over St. Olaf sponsored Visit Days. Requests for alternate times are approved on a case-by-case basis.

To register please fill out our Group Registration Form. Please request your visit at least two weeks in advance. Once you have requested time on campus, our visit coordinator will email you to confirm.

Visit Day Programs

St. Olaf offers multiple opportunities throughout the year to visit campus and see a more formal program. These are a great way to visit campus if you want to get an overall feel for St. Olaf. Visit Day programs always include tours, interactions with current students, access to Admissions staff, and delicious food from Bon Appetit. Some may even include department-specific information, faculty lectures or panels, and more.
