Did you know that in order to stay healthy, some level is stress is necessary? However, it is important to keep the stress at a healthy level.
Tips for Keeping Stress at a Healthy Level
- Eat—Three times per day really is best. Protein-based meals for breakfast and lunch promote good concentration and good sleep.
- Sleep—Even in college, you need 7-9 hours of sleep most nights. Anything less can result in sleep deprivation and increased stress. Going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every day—even on the weekends—helps to keep your brain out of “jetlag”. It is better to wake up at the same time and nap later than vary your sleep pattern too much.
- Play—Allow yourself to let off steam by having fun every day. Play is NOT a waste of time. Take study breaks. Going for a walk or hanging out with friends can help to clear your mind. It helps to put a time limit on your play time and your break times. Consider setting an alarm to alert you to get back to work.
- Exercise—Try for 30 minutes most days. As you are able —walk fast to your classes, work out, run, dance, jump rope, ride a bike, take the stairs, etc.
- Breathe—breathe in slowly for the count of 4 and out for the count of 6. Try doing this several times each day.
- Ask for Help—Whether you are struggling with academics or personal issues, don’t be afraid to ask for some help. Anyone in CAAS can help get you connected to the right resources!
