Marino recognized by Boxing Writers Association of America

MarinoGordon300x350St. Olaf College Professor of Philosophy Gordon Marino received an honorable mention from the Boxing Writers Association of America for a news story he penned in the Wall Street Journal last December.

In “The Day After the Big Fight,” Marino covers Juan Manuel Márquez’s knockout victory over Manny Pacquiao, but he also moves beyond reportage to discuss some of the bigger issues in the sport.

“Boxing is a sport framed in ambivalence. Even those of us who love the science and grit of fighters have our qualms and worry about the gladiators we cheer,” Marino writes. “That ambivalence was compressed in the ring Saturday as Márquez leapt in joy while Pacquiao struggled to sit up.”

This is not the first time that Marino has been honored by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Last year he won both a second-place award and an honorable mention for boxing pieces published in 2011.
