Wall Street Journal piece features expertise of two St. Olaf professors
In a piece he penned for the Wall Street Journal examining the Mexican Boxing tradition, St. Olaf College Professor of Philosophy Gordon Marino didn’t have to look far for insight into the mindset of the nation’s pugilists.
Instead he turned to St. Olaf Associate Professor of English Carlos Gallego, an expert on Hispanic studies who tells readers that “A macho willingness to fight to the end, even against impossible odds, has always been an integral part of the Mexican psyche.”
Marino, a nationally recognized journalist, penned the piece in advance of Saturday’s contest between Juan Manuel Márquez and Timothy Bradley (which he also live blogged for the Wall Street Journal).
“Boxing evokes something close to existential significance south of the border, with great Mexican fighters glimmering as beacons of hope, strength, and resilience to countrymen in both Mexico and the U.S.,” Marino writes.
Marino and Gallego co-coach the St. Olaf Boxing Club and have worked together to train local boxers.
