WCCO shares story of Rwandan student

photoA story on local CBS news affiliate WCCO-TV profiles Norbert Abayisenga ’17, who left Rwanda for the first time two weeks ago to enroll as a first-year student at St. Olaf College.

Orphaned at a young age by the Rwandan Genocide, Abayisenga graduated at the top of his high school class in Rwanda and plans to study nursing at St. Olaf. He tells WCCO that he’s learning to adjust to campus life with the help of a wide array of new friends — including his roommate, Boston native Matthew Ferguson ’17, and international student advisor Bradley Sancken ’15.

“I think Norbert will be a better person for having been at St. Olaf,” says Michael Kyle ’85, vice president for enrollment and college relations. “But I think even more important, our students will become better people because of their time with Norbert.”
