Inclusive Teaching/Teaching for Inclusive Excellence
The 2013-14 opening St. Olaf Faculty Meeting included an all-faculty workshop on “inclusive teaching,” with a talk and discussion led by Dr. Frank Tuitt, Associate Provost for Inclusive Excellence at the University of Denver. The workshop, “Rethinking our Pedagogy in Increasingly Diverse College Classrooms,” considered theories, concepts and strategies that are most effective for creating inclusive learning environments in which all students — regardless of background — have a chance to be the best they can be. Resources from the workshop:
Mary A. Armstrong, “Small World: Crafting an Inclusive Classroom (No Matter What You Teach)” (2011, National Education Association) – circulated in advance of the August 29 workshop.
Frank Tuitt, “Race and Higher Education: Rethinking Pedagogy in Diverse College Classrooms” – talk at St. Olaf College, August 29, 2013.
Additional suggestions for teaching in racially diverse college classrooms: Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University.
