Thank you for working with a student who is designing an individual, integrative major through the Center for Integrative Studies (CIS).
As the academic advisor, you will be one of this student’s significant sources for guidance through the course of the planned major and for expertise in one or more of the fields that it incorporates. You will also supervise your student’s senior integrative project and be responsible for its evaluation in early May. At all times the student and you will have the support of the faculty and staff of the CIS.
You will be part of a faculty review committee convened to consider approval of this proposal. The committee includes the Director and Program Coordinator of the CIS, at least one other faculty member with expertise relevant to the proposal, and another student. Also invited are the consulting librarian, and the faculty consultant if there is one. The committee will consider criteria including but not limited to:
• Whether the student proposes a clearly defined and defensible area of study
• Whether the proposed major includes both appropriate foundations for study and advanced undergraduate work in the chosen field
• Whether the student’s plan makes good use of the resources of the college
• Whether the initial proposal for a senior project is suitable in context of the major and feasible as two units of study over the two semesters of the senior year.
Your comments will be part of the information considered by members of the faculty review committee. Please include reasons for your support of the proposal as well as concerns you may have about its implementation.
