Craig Stern was named head coach at St. Olaf on February 8, 2013. The 2013 season will be Stern’s 10th at St. Olaf. He joined the staff as the recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2010. Stern came to St. Olaf after a five-year stint at Concordia-St. Paul. At Concordia-St. Paul, Stern was the defensive coordinator. The Golden Bears’ defense was ranked fourth nationally when they captured a NSIC title in 2003. Stern was the assistant offensive coordinator at Dana College from 1997-1999, and was an assistant coach at Kimball High School in 1996.
Justin Lerfald was the St. Olaf Defensive Line Coach for 7 years. Mentored numerous All Conference, All Region, and All American players for the Oles. During Coach Lerf’s tenure, the Oles averaged over 25 sacks per season. Coach Lerf teaches discipline and proven technique.
Eric Yuen ’08 returns for his second season On The Hill as the Oles offensive line coach. Coach Yuen brings incredible experience after spending the last 7 years working with both offensive and defensive lines and had mentored several All-Region and All American linemen at Springfield College. Coach Yuen, a 2008 graduate of St. Olaf, was an All American, All-Region and All Conference offensive lineman for the Oles.
Vince Varpness has returned to St. Olaf for his 4th season after serving as a high school head coach and offensive coordinator in the twin cities area. His coaching career began at the University of MN under Coach Glen Mason where he worked with WR’s and DB’s during his tenure. Besides St. Olaf and the U of MN, Varpness has worked at Burnsville H.S., St. Louise Park H.S. and MN West Community College. Varpness has personally recruited/coached 3 All-Americans, 2 All-Region XIII players of the year, 3 All-Regional players, and 6-First Team All State players and numerous 1st and 2nd Team All-Conference and Academic players.
