The handbell program at St. Olaf College consists of three handbell ensembles. Entrance is by audition in the fall. The St. Olaf Handbell Choir and the Chapel Ringers are directed by faculty member Jill Mahr.
The St. Olaf Handbell Choir has a demanding performance schedule featuring a high level of literature. The group tours regionally every year, presents a biannual children’s concert and performs regularly off campus at church services and concerts. They have participated in the critically acclaimed St. Olaf Christmas Festival, premiering Glories Ring, Joyous Noel, and Gladsome Bells, all written by faculty member Steven Amundson for handbells and orchestra.
Chapel Ringers typically perform four times a semester. They are expected to have proficient handbell technique. Emphasis in this choir is on improving that technique and creating a musical ensemble.
Manitou Handbell Choir typically perform twice a semester. The group is student-directed and emphasizes learning handbell technique and playing as an ensemble.
