St. Olaf provides networked storage space for use by students, faculty, and staff. This storage space is available from all college-owned computers on campus. Additionally, users can access their files from their personal computers on and off campus.
If you are off-campus, before following the steps below, you’ll need to setup a VPN connection on your personal computer.
Backups and Restores
The network file storage is backed up nightly and in most cases, a document that is accidentally deleted can be recovered from backup. If you need a recovery performed, please e-mail email@example.com informing them of the name of the file/document deleted, when it was deleted and where it was located.
Backups of the network file storage are retained for varying amounts of time, depending on the type of data:
- Users’ personal folders (home directory / H: drive) are retained for 2 years following the expiration of the account.
- Class folder backups are retained for 5 years.
- Shared folder backups are retained for 13 months.
- Web content backups are retained for 13 months. (Backups from affiliated web sites like oleville.com are retained for 6 months.)
