The philosophy department at St. Olaf College is very much committed to welcoming students into the practice of philosophy. You will find a variety of expertise and methods but similar joy, wonder, spirit of collaboration and openness to contributions you might bring to our dialogues. Our goal is to learn from each other and the great history of ideas, and to seek to contribute–with you–to the pursuit of philosophy around the globe.
Many of us are philosophically active internationally: one of us has taught philosophy in China, some of us have offered philosophical contributions in Copenhagen, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Moscow, and elsewhere; five of us have given papers in the UK. Some of the books we have published are translated in Portuguese, German, Spanish, French, and Korean. One of the books one of us is in has been translated into nine languages.
Our philosophy is not to simply teach what great thinkers have taught, but to engage the arguments and themes of the greatest thinkers, east and west. You will find individual profiles of the faculty on this site, but overall, I think you will find the department very strong in the philosophy of science.
