In partnership with the Piper Center, the Institute for Freedom and Community is pleased to offer grant awards for first years, sophomores, and juniors pursuing unpaid or underpaid internships focused on public affairs during the summer 2015.
This internship is open to work in public affairs in all sectors– government, for-profit and non-profit. The maximum award is $3,000, based on expenses associated with the internship. Students who are not selected for Public Affairs internship will automatically be considered for the general Piper Center Internship Award (maximum of $2,000).

Eligibility Guidelines
- Minimum of 240 hours total spanning at least 8 weeks in the summer of 2015.
- The internship must have a primary focus on public affairs or public policy. This will include work in government at any level, a political campaign, or a non-profit organization that focuses on a major public policy issue. For-profit organizations are possible if the position involves government relations or work on major public issues such as health care, education, or the environment.

Application Process
All applicants will use the submission process detailed under the Piper Center Grant Award for paid or unpaid internships. When completing the Grant Award Application (online form) applicants will have a chance to indicate that you would like to be considered for the Public Affairs Internship Award. Applicants will then be prompted for a two or three sentence description of how their internship duties and responsibilities engage the major public issues that face our nation and world
Terms of Agreement
All terms listed under the Piper Center Grant Award for paid or unpaid internships apply to this grant award. In addition all grant award recipients will be expected to submit the following to Dan Hofrenning, Director, Institute for Freedom and Community:
- A summary reflection about what you learned about yourself, the workplace, and public affairs or public policy during the internship.
- Any additional deliverables provided to your employer that illustrate your work and what you learned that are not subject to confidentiality agreements or covered as trade secrets.
