Latin American Studies

Starting a major

  • Students can major in Latin American Studies, which requires nine courses, or do a five-course Latin American Studies Concentration. Either option will enhance your understanding of Latin American countries and the interconnectedness of Latin America and the United States.
  • The concentration differs from the Latin American Studies major in that it does not require coursework in Spanish.

Are there courses students MUST/SHOULD/CAN take their First Year?

  • Must:  Because the Latin American Studies major requires that you complete one intermediate Spanish course (Spanish 250) and two upper division Spanish courses, those who have little or no Spanish fluency should take Spanish courses as soon as possible. If your placement test indicates that you are ready for 250, you may take that class when you wish. This does not apply to concentrators.
  • Should: Because all majors must take either History 193 or Political Science 264, you may wish to consider taking one of these courses your first or second year. These may be taken during the first year or later. Students may also consider taking History 126 (Conquest and Colonization), which counts toward both the major and concentration and is only open to first-year students.
  • Can: You may wish to start looking into the possibility of studying abroad (up to three of the courses for either the major or concentration may be taken in Latin America or Spain). Students may also consider taking History 126 (Conquest and Colonization) which counts toward both the major and concentration and is only open to first-year students.
