All students must complete the Mathematics Placement Survey which opens at https://wp.stolaf.edu/math/
The Mathematics Placement Survey is designed to help you determine the best place to start your study of mathematics at St. Olaf. The survey provides information about our courses and requirements and asks you questions about your mathematics background and academic interests. In the first part of the survey you will determine if you have already satisfied St. Olaf’s Quantitative and Computational Reasoning (QCR) general education requirement. The second part of the process will help you decide which mathematics course is the best place to start should you need or want more mathematics.
AP credit: Scores of 4 or 5 on any of the following AP exams should be reported to the Registrar’s office at St. Olaf since you may receive AQR and/or course credit: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, the AB subscore of the Calculus BC exam, and/or Statistics. Reporting scores lower than 4 is optional. See St. Olaf’s AP policy.
IB credit: Credit may be awarded for IB Mathematics “Analysis and Approaches” HL or SL or “Applications and Interpretation” (HL only). Students scoring 5-7 on the HL exams or 6-7 on the “Analysis and Approaches” SL exam may receive QCR and/or course credit. St. Olaf does not give credit for IB “Applications and Interpretation” SL. See St. Olaf’s IB policy.
Cambridge A-Level credit: Students receiving an A on the Cambridge A-Level Mathematics exam may receive QCR and/or course credit. See St. Olaf’s Cambridge A-Level policy.
Credit for college courses: If you completed a statistics, calculus, or more advanced mathematics course at or through a college or university, you should have a transcript sent from the college or university to the Registrar at St. Olaf. You should also complete the Mathematics Placement Survey. St. Olaf does not give credit for courses in precalculus, college algebra, or trigonometry.
Even if you are still waiting on AP/IB/CAL scores, please proceed with the survey.
If you any questions about the placement process, please e-mail math-placement@stolaf.
