According to Bue, the 1911 class octet was practicing a Norwegian folk song, <em>Jeg Har Ute Pulten<\/em>, which was to be sung at half time during a basketball game. Due to logistics of teaching two audiences separated by a basketball court and the shortage of time, they simply substituted &#8220;Um! Yah! Yah!&#8221; for the words of the chorus.<\/p>\n<p>The first published account of <em>Um! Yah! Yah!<\/em> appears in the combined <a href=\"http:\/\/elevator.stolaf.edu\/archives\/asset\/viewAsset\/588a213ce758aea74cf0fcd0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1913\u201314\u201315 <em>Viking<\/em><\/a>\u00a0yearbook (p. 213, under the title <em>Jeg Har Ute Pulten<\/em>).\u00a0St. Olaf is the only American college or university whose fight song is sung in 3\/4, or waltz, time.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We come from St. Olaf, we sure are the real stuff.<\/em><br \/><em> Our team is the cream of the colleges great.<\/em><br \/><em> We fight fast and furious, our team is injurious.<\/em><br \/><em> Tonight Carleton College will sure meet its fate.<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Um!
