Week one is spent on campus learning basic clinical techniques, examining emerging disease, and studying existing health care issues. Students spend three weeks in Cuzco, Peru, assessing patient needs in a public hospital, a homeless shelter, orphanages, and a small village. Week four involves discussion and writing reflective journals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Exercise Science<\/h2>\n<p><strong>ESTH 295 Internship and Reflection Seminar<\/strong><\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69de875faf305\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >Read Description<\/span><span id='swap-id69de875faf305'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Close Description<\/span><div id=\"target-id69de875faf305\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>This seminar integrates the liberal arts with the experience of work and the search for a vocation or career.\u00a0\u00a0Course content will include both an off-campus\u00a0internship\u00a0and on-campus class sessions that connect academic theories\/analyses of work with their particular\u00a0internship\u00a0experience.\u00a0\u00a0Students will also consider and articulate the value of the liberal arts for their pursuit of a creative, productive, and satisfying professional life<\/p>\n<p>One of the overarching goals is to provide a space to reflect on the challenges, hopes, and anxieties that accompany the experiences of having an internship and searching out post-college employment.\u00a0\u00a0Classroom discussions focus on analyzing and understanding the students&#8217; experiences in their internships and how they potentially connect with future professions that are personally rewarding and meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0class was specifically designed to include students in pre-health, pre-med, and exercise science.\u00a0Students are exposed to a wide range of sub-fields through in-depth conversation with other students.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Music<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Music 268\u00a0Opera Creation Residency in the Schools: Civic Engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69de875faf340\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >Read Description<\/span><span id='swap-id69de875faf340'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Close Description<\/span><div id=\"target-id69de875faf340\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>This course is designed for students interested in civic engagement in the arts and arts fusion projects. Participants mentor students from a local elementary school in an Opera Creation Residency as the elementary students compose and perform their own original works. The course culminates in staged public performances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Psychology<\/h2>\n<p><strong>PSYCH 224\u00a0Community Applications of Psychology<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69de875faf378\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >Read Description<\/span><span id='swap-id69de875faf378'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Close Description<\/span><div id=\"target-id69de875faf378\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>This course integrates on-campus classroom activities with service-learning placements in and around Northfield. Scholarly readings, classroom discussions, and assignments highlight the unique theoretical perspectives, skills, and methodological approaches that psychologists use to address social problems and community needs through research, practice, and policy. Students&#8217; on-site experiences and observations provide opportunities for the application of previous coursework as well as guided reflection and exploration of goals for personal and vocational development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Social Work<\/h2>\n<p><strong>SW 122 Global Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic \" id=\"id69de875faf3af\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >Read Description<\/span><span id='swap-id69de875faf3af'  class='colomat-swap' style='display:none;'>Close Description<\/span><div id=\"target-id69de875faf3af\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>Students have the option of partnering with community organizations through a Taking Action project.\u00a0 Students engage with community partners in projects that involve education, awareness, or fundraising related to global challenges that impact the local community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The descriptions below highlight the academic civic engagement component of each class.
