This handbook provides tools and resources to help make your experience as easy as possible while also maintaining academic rigor, ethical standards, and responsibility to the community and greater good.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"collapseomatic movearrow\" id=\"id69d7b6667f518\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >How can civic engagement be valuable to my students?<\/h4><div id=\"target-id69d7b6667f518\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/case-for-ace\/\">The Case for ACE<\/a> &#8211; Research on the value of civic engagement as a high-impact teaching practice, for supporting a diverse student body, for developing skills employers value, for building content knowledge, and for contributing to civic life.<\/li>\n<li>You might also watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/multimedia\/play\/?p=798\">this video<\/a>, created by Allyvia Garza, Solveig Hanes, Gabriel Marinho, and Christian Schlaefer as their ACE project in Sian Christie&#8217;s &#8220;Organizational Storytelling&#8221; course, Fall 2019, to hear from them how to ACE can be valuable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h4 class=\"collapseomatic movearrow\" id=\"id69d7b6667f59e\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >How do I find out more about the local community and its priorities to connect with in a course?<\/h4><div id=\"target-id69d7b6667f59e\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>There are many ways to learn more about the local community and ways to connect to priorities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with you&#8211;your own interests (personal and professional), your own community involvement, and your own network of connections! The most successful ACE projects occur when faculty themselves are invested in an issue or the work of an organization.<\/li>\n<li>The ACE website has an entire section dedicated to<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/issue-areas\/\"> Issue Areas<\/a> that list a variety of local and regional nonprofits and organizations who are working towards goals in these areas.<\/li>\n<li>There is also an <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/available-community-projects\/\">ongoing list of community projects<\/a> that you could consider tapping into through an ACE collaboration.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule a time to talk with the ACE office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"collapseomatic movearrow\" id=\"id69d7b6667f5d7\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >How do I begin to integrate ACE into a course?<\/h4><div id=\"target-id69d7b6667f5d7\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>The Academic Civic Engagement Program provides individualized consultations with faculty interested in adding an ACE component to a course.\u00a0 In general, setting up an ACE component the first time it is offered is the most time-consuming step and therefore, it is recommended that planning begin 3-5 months ahead of time, depending on the complexity of the project.\u00a0 One reason for advance planning is to allow for coordination with community partner organizations, who may need to adjust their schedules or plan for supervision of students in order to participate.\u00a0 The following worksheet introduces things to think about as you begin designing an ACE project.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/files\/2014\/07\/Civic-Engagement-Course-Design-Worksheet.docx\">Civic Engagement Course Design Worksheet<\/a> (pdf) &#8211; A list of things to think about as you design an ACE project<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/files\/2020\/02\/STO-ACE-partnership-agreement.docx.pdf\">ACE Partnership Worksheet<\/a> (pdf) &#8211; <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This form intends to clarify roles, responsibilities, expectations, and outcomes between community partners, faculty, and students that are associated with academic civic engagement (ACE) projects within a course. What are your <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/student_outcomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/student_outcomes\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581617750170000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFTt8FzA-6pLXuXKx8eKLXJODVhHw\">civic learning goals<\/a> for your ACE course?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Project\/activity that is beneficial to the community partner or the general &#8220;community&#8221; at large (as you&#8217;re defining it)?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Clear and transparent project\/activity description that makes the explicit connection between the course content and the activity?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Logistical information that is easily accessible by students: <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/transportation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/transportation\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581617750171000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGEYy92OIlsh5Cw-5FfYKyZslfpig\">transportation<\/a>, partner contact information, background check forms, etc?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Adequate preparation for the students to work within the community and with diverse individuals? Could include partner as guest speaker beforehand, ACE office presentation, reviewing professional work expectations, etc.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1Q_ASa3fswMeWq-lW5bE0WiZ4_XgWviBW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id%3D1Q_ASa3fswMeWq-lW5bE0WiZ4_XgWviBW&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1581617750171000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF3g2EeGPhXi2fx1BrLjLhxKMKplA\">Critical reflection<\/a> at least once before, during, and after ACE activity (ideally, all three!) with guiding questions related to your course goals?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Way(s) to assess student learning that results from the ACE activity?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h4 class=\"collapseomatic movearrow\" id=\"id69d7b6667f608\"  tabindex=\"0\"     >How do I officially designate a class as ACE?<\/h4><div id=\"target-id69d7b6667f608\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<p>The decision is up to each individual instructor as determined by guidelines established by the Academic Civic Engagement Advisory Committee.
