{"id":31,"date":"2013-10-22T04:31:22","date_gmt":"2013-10-22T04:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/civic_engagement_program\/"},"modified":"2023-06-07T08:08:31","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T13:08:31","slug":"civic_engagement_program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ace\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Civic Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>Academic civic engagement (ACE) is a high-impact educational practice through a for-credit course or mentored public scholarship that enables students to apply academic knowledge and skills within a real-world context to address community issues and build the civic identity of all participants (students, faculty, community partners).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE has three key attributes:<strong> intentional experiences<\/strong> with identified and measurable outcomes and the reciprocal exchange of knowledge and resources between all participants (students, faculty, and community partners); <strong>critical reflection<\/strong> on personal outcomes, community outcomes, and civic identity; and <strong>impact assessment<\/strong> of all participants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Often referred to as\u00a0<em>community-based research<\/em>,\u00a0<em>service-learning<\/em>,\u00a0<em>community-based learning, community-engaged learning,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>public scholarship<\/em>, ACE\u00a0facilitates the development of skills, habits of mind, and relationships that prepare students for future internship, research, civic leadership, and work roles.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community partners are integral to the ACE experience. St. Olaf believes in the importance and impact of maintaining connections with local communities.
