Dance

Starting a major

Most students begin the dance major during the first year or sophomore year.  If students are thinking about the dance major they should talk to a dance faculty as soon as possible.

Are there courses/experiences students MUST, SHOULD, or CAN take their First Year?

Must: There are no courses for the dance major that absolutely must be taken in the first year.  However we strongly recommend that students interested in majoring in dance

Should:

  • Take Dance 100:  Introduction to Dance MWF 11:50-12:45pm offered only in the fall AND
  • Take a movement intensive course/s (Dance 106, 107, 108, 109, 111, 112, 113, 121, 130/131, 141, 160, 206, 207, 209,  210/211, 220/221, 240/241, 250/251, 260/261).  Level 200 courses are for those with previous dance experience in that form.  Dance 210/211, Dance 220/221, Dance 240/241, Dance 250/251, and Dance 260/261 can be taken for either .50 credit (Dance 210, 240, 250, or 260) or .25 credit (Dance 211, 221, 241, 251 or 261).  If taking courses for .50 credit there is extra outside of class work required AND

Credit for transfer courses are done in consultation with the Registrar and the Dance Department Chair

Placement

  • The first day of class in movement intensive courses is used to determine placement. If students have questions about what level movement courses they should register for they can talk to Dance faculty at the Dance Department Information sessions.
  • Usually level 1 movement intensive courses are for those students that haven’t had that specific form of dance before. Level 2 classes are for those students who have had several years of experience in that specific dance form.
