Starting a major

There are three “Gateway” courses that students should choose as they begin a Theater major. These are THEAT 130 Introduction to Acting, THEAT 140 Introduction to Design for Performance, and THEAT 180 Text and Performance.

Are there courses students MUST, SHOULD, or CAN take their First Year?

  • Must: No requirements for the first year.
  • Should: Students should try to enroll in one or more of the three level 100 gateway courses during their first year:  THEAT 130, THEAT 140 or THEAT 180.  Students should consider becoming involved in theater productions through auditions, practicum courses, or work-study positions.
  • Can: Once a Gateway course has been taken, students can move on to advanced courses or other gateway courses.  Students can consider taking the THEAT 133 Producing Theater course during January Interim during their first year (check with the main theater office or go to the informational events listed below for more information about registering for this course).
