Alumni Achievement Award Recipient\"Alan<\/a><\/h3>\n

Alan C. Shepard ’83 believes in the power of higher education to transform lives, even after more than two decades as a professor and academic leader at universities in the United States and Canada, his adopted home.<\/p>\n

In 2012, Shepard was appointed president of Concordia University, located in the heart of Montreal, Quebec. Shepard earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia and has held teaching and administrative positions at the University of Virginia, Texas Christian University, and the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. He also served as provost and chief operating officer of Ryerson University in Toronto before becoming president at Concordia University.<\/p>\n

A driving force throughout Shepard\u2019s career has been an interest in the academic and administrative challenges facing contemporary universities. He was instrumental in creating Ryerson\u2019s Digital Media Zone (DMZ), one of Canada\u2019s largest business incubators and co-working spaces for entrepreneurs. At Concordia, Shepard has supported the creation of a space similar to Ryerson\u2019s DMZ, providing Concordia students with the tools and resources they need to test, develop, and advance innovative and entrepreneurial ideas. Shepard has published books and articles and engaged in public service, including with the Montreal Board of Trade, the Stratford Festival, and Fondation Montr\u00e9al, which supports start-ups in Quebec.<\/p>\n
