This gave us opportunity to greet Theamarie \u201cTimmie\u201d and all four daughters, and to meet Isaiah&#8217;s nephew Darryl Harriday from his home community near Baltimore. We were delighted to meet <strong>A. Joris \u201cJory\u201d Watland \u201963<\/strong>&#8216;s niece Marta there.<\/p>\n<p>It was a lovely service, very reflective of this multi-racial family. There were folks from various religious and racial backgrounds present: the former Bishop of the ELCA, Mark Hanson, preached, and the music included solos and duets by African-American singers, as well as hymns familiar to us.<\/p>\n<p>As the obituary indicated, the family suggested memorials to NAMI of Minnesota or to the ELCA world hunger fund, so we did follow the family&#8217;s request and wrote a check to one of these organizations. We would hope that many of our class might choose to memorialize Isaiah with a gift to St. Olaf; we did make such a memorial online today, designating ours to students who are persons of color, recognizing the courage and leadership Ike exhibited in being only the second African-American to graduate from St. Olaf.<\/p>\n<p>Julie and Howie<\/p>\n<p>P.S. &#8211; On a personal note, we moved this last year from our family home of 44 years to a townhome in Northfield, Minn.
