Congratulations to the 2025-26 Emerging Artists!<\/strong>

<\/strong>Ashley Marcial Rodriguez<\/a>, Emily Page<\/a>, and Annie Sanders<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective of the Emerging Artist program is to offer St. Olaf graduates an intensive \u201cArtist in Residence\u201d experience to better prepare them for graduate school or a professional career in the arts. The program is designed for self-motivated artists and curators who wish to make visual arts the core of their professional future. In the academic year after graduation, Emerging Artists receive a stipend for art materials, create and exhibit their own artwork, and make positive contributions to the community of art students, faculty, and staff. They also act as mentors to undergraduate art students and help facilitate community events, including the department gathering in the fall and the juried exhibition in the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior Studio Art majors who wish to apply for the Emerging Artist Program should meet with their Art-343 advisor to discuss their application. Advisors will recommend candidly whether or not the student should apply and may provide feedback on a draft of the letter of application.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Emerging Artist program is generously supported by the Leean Carpenter Endowed Fund.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t

An in depth article on the history and impact of the Emerging Artist Program<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1982, Professor Arch Leean initiated the program as an \u201cAlumni Artist in Residence,\u201d lasting 3 and \u00bd months during the fall semester. The alum was given a studio space and small stipend with the intent of developing an extended body of work and an \u201copen studio environment\u201d that encouraged numerous interactions with undergraduate art students. After 4 successful years, it became clear that it was difficult for alumni to get 3+ months release from their work schedules. In 1988, the program shifted to offer studio space, a small stipend for materials, and portfolio development for two recent graduates. Steven Carpenter \u201982 supported the materials stipend for four Emerging Artists for nearly three decades. In 2011, an endowed fund was established with generous support from Steven Carpenter, Beth Christiansen and Wendell Arneson, and other alumni and friends of the program.<\/p>\n

With the ongoing support of the Art Department, the program has supported art alumni, giving them a year of mentorship, studio space, materials fees, portfolio development, and opportunities to act as mentors to undergraduate students.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div> \n\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t

Ashley Marcial Rodriguez (she\/her)<\/h4>\n

Personal experiences inspire my artwork, exploring the emotions and connections I have with them. I primarily work with physical media, ranging from 2D art to photography, and I find myself appreciating the hands-on process of creating artwork.\u00a0 When making art, my goal is to produce highly intentional, detailed work, and I love incorporating elements of my background, Mexican culture and shared memories into my pieces. Through various mediums, I aim to share these parts of myself with others while giving voice to my heritage.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\"\"My work primarily explores 2D and 3D realms using felting techniques with wool and various printmaking processes.\u00a0I really enjoy wool\u2019s malleability\u00a0and how it allows so much room for change and movement. I appreciate how wool’s forgiving\u00a0nature invites experimentation, allowing me to explore the intersection of 2D and 3D form.\u00a0This material reflects my current stage of life and it has been a cathartic experience to work\u00a0alongside the movement of this material as I continue to grow into myself. I would also like to continue working in printmaking, specifically with woodblock relief\u00a0printing. I am interested in discovering the relationship\u00a0between felting and relief, as felting adds material and relief carves away. I’m curious to see\u00a0how this relationship will impact my artistic practice.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

My artist practice revolves around black and white film photography. I have experience in medium and large format film photography. My documentation style tends to stray towards spontaneity, meaning that I try to let the camera \u201cspeak to me\u201d on the days I am photographing. I am eager to continue my exploration into printmaking not only in the darkroom, but also in lithography. Through these various forms of image making. I hope to continue to explore themes of intimacy and community across portraiture and landscape.<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div> \n\t<\/div> \n\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n
