Disability and Access can provide services to students experiencing a temporary medical condition (such as broken limbs, concussion symptoms, or short term healing associated with surgery) which limits the student’s ability to function in the classroom and/or physical environment.
Academic accommodations for temporary medical conditions will need to be reviewed and approved at regular intervals to assess any ongoing barriers to the academics and whether the accommodations are still warranted.
Students with a temporary condition need to follow the same eligibility process as students with disabilities:
- Fill out a New Student Application in myDAC
- Meet with an Access Specialist for a meeting
- Provide documentation from your doctor or diagnosing party to determine eligibility for academic accommodations and auxiliary aids and services.
Guidelines for what we need in documentation for a temporary condition are as follow:
- A clear statement of the diagnosis
- A summary of presenting symptoms as it relates to the diagnosis
- A description of the functional limitations resulting from the temporary condition
- A list of the recommended educational accommodations
- A prognosis of length of time the accommodations may be needed
- Signature and diagnosis made by a qualified professional practicing in the area in which the disability is diagnosed and who is not related to the student
Once an accommodation letter is sent to the student’s faculty, the student must have a conversation with the instructor to discuss the logistics of the accommodation in each course.
Temporary accommodations will be reviewed/renewed on a semester-by-semester basis, or on a timeline specified by the documentation.
