they both received the same amount of water and fertilizer.\u00a0 The difference in growth resulted when the plants on the left were injected with corn smut at the age of three weeks.\u00a0 A regular hypodermic needle was used for the study.\u00a0 The two students are part of a class in mycology, studying various forms of fungus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Tree Rings\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/biology\/files\/2013\/06\/TreeRingsMar71958.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"250\" \/>\u00a0Text with photo<\/p>\n<p>With magnifying glass in hand, a St. Olaf biology student ponders over the history etched in tree growth rings.\u00a0 By close examination, students found 119 rings in this oak slab.\u00a0 One ring is an annual growth, but weather and soil conditions each year affect the size of the rings greatly.\u00a0 Editorial dept<\/p>\n<p>Additional info in photograph &#8211;
