Christ the Surgeon: Science and Spirituality in Medieval Medical Drawings
September 28, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
This talk will address the intersection of science and spirituality in medieval art through the lens of medical illustration. In an incredible series of fourteenth-century illuminations, a popular surgical textbook by Roger of Salerno is illustrated with both innovative images of medical procedures and conventional scenes from the life and passion of Christ. How and why have these two discourses been placed side by side? Karl Whittington offers a reading of and argument about these fascinating miniatures, in addition to situating them within broader patterns of incorporating religious symbolism into scientific illustrations.
