Manumission Tour with John Taylor Chapman

Join us for “Freedom’s Fight in Alexandria.” This 90-minute presentation on the streets of Old Town will give participants insight into Alexandria’s pre-civil war history of urban slavery, and highlight runaway slaves, like Oscar and George Ball, and abolitionists, such as pharmacist Edward Stabler, who pushed back against the “Peculiar Institution” of slavery.

Manumission Tour Company curates guided cultural heritage tours designed to highlight Alexandria’s extensive African American History. Founded by a fourth generation Alexandrian, this company offers weekend guided walking tours February thru December. Personalized group tours and step-on services are available by request. Bio: John Taylor Chapman, a fourth-generation Alexandrian and 2003 graduate of St. Olaf College, founded Manumission Tour Company in 2016. John also serves Alexandria as a City Council member, in his 3rd term on the council. Professionally, John works for the Fairfax County Public School System as a Community Use Specialist. John lives in the Taylor Run neighborhood with is wife Monika and son, John II.
