Seeing Minnesota’s Indigenous Histories with Ramona Kitto Stately

October 11, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Responding to Ken Gonzales-Day: Shadowlands, Ramona Kitto Stately will address how violences perpetrated against Minnesota’s indigenous community reverberate across time and through families and communities. The 1862 hanging of 38 Dakota men in Mankato, Minnesota was a government-sanctioned execution, unlike the extra-judicial lynchings that are the focus of Gonzales-Day’s research. Stately’s lecture will ask: what happened to the women, children, and elders who survived the 38 Dakota men hung in Mankato? What was the impact of this history for a matriarchal society? Whose stories are missing from the historical record?
