The St. Olaf College Theater Department presents: Translations by Brian Friel, and directed by Peter Christian Hansen.
Ireland in 1833 is at a moment of historic change and an ancient culture and language are about to be swept away. A national education system, with English as the official language, is to replace the rural, Irish-speaking, Classics-loving hedge-schools of the villages whose very names are to be Anglicized by the British dispatched to the area. Against this 19th century backdrop, age-old stories of loyalty, conquest, and tragic love unfold in all their beauty and heartbreak.
