SUMMARY:Let's Talk: Collection Conversations
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to visit Let’s Talk: Collection Conversations\, an exhibition that emerges from a semester-long collaboration between students in Making Museums Matter (ARTH 282) and the Flaten Art Museum. At its core is a deceptively simple question: What happens when a museum is treated as a place for conversations rather than conclusions? \nThe exhibition highlights five new acquisitions that serve as catalysts for inquiry rather than fixed narratives. Building from these works\, students developed themes that invite dialogue\, contrast\, and curiosity. The adjacent  “living room” space offers room for personal reflection. Let’s Talk: Collection Conversations welcomes visitors into a museum shaped by shared conversations where meaning is sparked by both dialogue and observation.

SUMMARY:Roots and Branches: Reflections on a Journey from St. Olaf through Public Health\, Community\, and Family
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Novak ’08 will return to campus to reflect on the path her life and work have taken since graduation. In this personal talk\, she will share some of the moments that shaped her journey after leaving The Hill\, from working at mobile clinics serving migrant agricultural workers in Iowa in the aftermath of the largest worksite immigration raid in U.S. history\, to (re)connecting with the Catholic Worker movement while studying at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.\n\nNovak will discuss how these experiences informed her doctoral research in social epidemiology\, including documenting the public health fallout of immigration enforcement\, and how living in a Catholic Worker house during her doctoral studies kept her from getting buried too deep “in the books”. Later\, she returned to her hometown in Iowa to conduct research alongside community organizations and leaders working for immigrant rights\, worker justice\, and community health.\n\nLastly\, Novak will reflect on her experience becoming a parent to two children\, including one with disabilities and medical complexities. This experience has deepened her understanding of care\, interdependence\, and the urgency of disability justice\, and is spurring another evolution in her life\, family\, and vocation.\n\nThrough these stories\, Novak will reflect on the joys and challenges of following a path that hasn’t always been linear\, and on her effort to honor the values of community\, justice\, and care as she moves through the seasons of life.\n\n\n\n\nNicole Novak is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science degree in Medical Anthropology and Global Health Science from the University of Oxford\, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar. She graduated from St. Olaf College with majors in Spanish\, Hispanic Studies and Environmental Studies. Nicole has worked with numerous community organizations\, including the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa\, the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa\, the Prairielands Freedom Fund\, and California Latinas for Reproductive Justice\, to conduct research and public engagement related to community health\, immigration enforcement\, civil rights and reproductive justice.
