SUMMARY:St. Olaf Virtual Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the St. Olaf Alumni Virtual Book Club for a Discussion of  the novel The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich. \nFounded by alumni in the DC/Baltimore area\, this book club is open to all St. Olaf graduates and friends of the college. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just love discussing great books\, we’d love to have you join us! \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent: St. Olaf Virtual Book Club\nBook: The Mighty Red: A Novel by Louise Erdrich\nDate: Saturday\, November 15\, 2025\nTime: 10 a.m. to Noon EST (US and Canada) via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Mighty Red is a novel of tender humor\, disturbance\, and hallucinatory mourning. It is about on-the-job pains and immeasurable satisfactions\, a turbulent landscape\, and eating the native weeds growing in your backyard. It is about ordinary people who dream\, grow up\, fall in love\, struggle\, endure tragedy\, carry bitter secrets; men and women both complicated and contradictory\, flawed and decent\, lonely and hopeful. It is about a starkly beautiful prairie community whose members must cope with devastating consequences as powerful forces upend them. As with all of Louise Erdrich’s books\, The Mighty Red is about our tattered bond with the earth\, and about love in all of its absurdity and splendor. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom meeting details will be provided via email after registration. \nQuestions: Michele Foss ’97 \nPlease note that the St. Olaf Virtual Book Club is a volunteer-led initiative. The gatherings are designed to be casual and social\, with conversations flowing organically from the attendees.

Homecoming 2025 is also happening on October 11\, and is worth the trip! Cheer on Oles at football and soccer\, catch the St. Olaf Band in the evening\, and pop into the archives exhibit for a memory lane moment. Wander the Campus Green for lawn games\, pumpkin painting\, and treats (apple tasting\, boba samples\, popcorn\, cotton candy). Bring your friends and enjoy a Saturday packed with fun on the Hill.. \nMore about the collection: The LGBTQ+ Oles Oral History Project launched in August 2024 as part of the Honest Storytelling Project for St. Olaf’s sesquicentennial. Inspired to find queer and trans histories of St. Olaf that were hidden in plain sight\, Averill Earls (Associate Professor of History) and Jaden Janak (Assistant Professor of History) embarked on a journey to talk to as many alumni as they could. In just over 12 months and with the help of five student researchers\, they have collected over 50 oral histories from LGBTQ+ alumni\, from the class of 1966 to the class of 2026. Participants were invited to tell their stories in sessions ranging from one to three hours\, then invited to review the transcript before donating it to the College Archives. In addition to oral histories\, the LGBTQ+ Oles Oral History Project team have been working with alumni to collect important ephemera that sheds light on queer and trans life and love at St. Olaf. This is a living collection\, which the research team will continue to grow indefinitely\, as long as alumni and other members of the St. Olaf community are willing to share their stories. It is our goal that this archive be a shining example of the contributions\, lives\, and histories of LGBTQ+ Oles\, who deserve to be valued and have their stories be told.

SUMMARY:St. Olaf Virtual Book Club
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to the next meeting of the St. Olaf Virtual Book Club! Join fellow Oles for a thoughtful discussion of “True Biz” by Sara Novic. \nThe students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up\, pass their history finals\, and have politicians\, doctors\, and their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf\, where they’ll meet Charlie\, a rebellious transfer student who’s never met another deaf person before; Austin\, the school’s golden boy\, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing; and February\, the hearing headmistress\, a CODA (child of deaf adult(s)) who is fighting to keep her school open and her marriage intact\, but might not be able to do both. As a series of crises both personal and political threaten to unravel each of them\, Charlie\, Austin\, and February find their lives inextricable from one another—and changed forever. \nThis is a story of sign language and lip-reading\, disability and civil rights\, isolation and injustice\, first love and loss\, and\, above all\, great persistence\, daring\, and joy. Absorbing and assured\, idiosyncratic and relatable\, this is an unforgettable journey into the Deaf community and a universal celebration of human connection. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent: St. Olaf Virtual Book Club\nBook: True Biz by Sara Novic\nDate: Saturday\, September 20\, 2025\nTime: 10 a.m. to Noon Eastern Time (US and Canada)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom meeting details will be provided via email after registration. \nQuestions: Michele Foss ’97

SUMMARY:Tashi Delek\, Minnesota!
DESCRIPTION:བཀྲིས་བདེ་ལེགས་ | Tashi Delek\, Minnesota! (Auspicious Blessings\, Minnesota!) offers a glimpse into the public life of Tibetan Minnesotans as seen through the eyes of St. Olaf alumnus Thor Anderson ‘87. In partnership with the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota\, Anderson has documented the community’s activities in photographs and videos over the last two decades. The selected works presented in this exhibition come from a vast archive that represents the rich community life of Buddhist practitioners in Minnesota. \nThis exhibition is on view the Center for Art and Dance Object Study Room (205). It is presented concurrently with the traveling exhibition\, Gateway to Himalayan Art\, on loan from the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art and on view in the Flaten Art Museum from September 12–December 7\, 2025. Tashi Delek\, Minnesota! is organized by the Flaten Art Museum and curated by Thor Anderson ‘87 and St. Olaf Professor of Art and Art History and Asian Studies Karil Kucera\, with curatorial contributions from the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota.
