SUMMARY:Guest Recital: Awadagin Pratt\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Through his kaleidoscopic career as a pianist\, conductor\, educator\, and curator of memorable musical moments\, Awadagin Pratt shines a light on voices of the past and present\, amplifies the diverse talents of today’s brightest creative minds\, and paves the way for a new generation of inventive musical artists. \nSince winning the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1992 and receiving a1994 Avery Fisher Career Grant\, Pratt has received acclaim for delivering “forceful\, imaginative\, and precisely tinted” performances (The Washington Post) and been hailed as “one of the great and distinctive American pianists and conductors of our time” (WGBH). He has appeared at addresses as familiar as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (at the invitation of the Clinton and Obama administrations) and Sesame Street (at the invitation of Big Bird): He has performed with the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras\, the New York Philharmonic\, and many others; in solo recitals at the Kennedy Center\, Carnegie Hall\, and Lincoln Center; and in chamber music collaborations with cellist Zuill Bailey\, pianist Simone Dinnerstein\, and the Harlem and St. Lawrence String Quartets. His 2023 recording\, Stillpoint\, explores the truth and beauty in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets through new works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Paola Prestini\, Peteris Vasks\, Jessie Montgomery\, Jonathan Bailey Holland\, Alvin Singleton\, and Judd Greenstein. \nHe became principal conductor of the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra in the 2023/24 season\, and he has conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh\, Georgia Symphony Orchestra (Tbilisi)\, and Bang on a Can at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He made his operatic debut leading Porgy and Bess with the Greensboro Opera (North Carolina). \nIn response to the murder of George Floyd\, Pratt created a podcast that evolved into a multimedia musical experience. Performed primarily on college campuses across the U.S.\, Awadagin Pratt: Black in America\, fuses music of Bach\, Messiaen\, and Liszt with still and moving pictures by filmmaker Alrick Brown and narration in which Pratt chronicles his life – from his time as a music student at the Peabody Conservatory through his ascent to international acclaim – through graphic accounts of numerous police stops and arrests he experienced for Driving While Black. In 2023\, a documentary version\, directed by Michelle Bauer Carpenter\, was screened at film festivals nationwide. \nPratt’s commitment to the next generation of pianists is evidenced by his work as founding director of the Next Generation Festival\, the Art of the Piano Foundation\, and the Nina Simone Piano Competition\, a new biennial competition that celebrates diversity in classical music. \nHe served as professor and artist in residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music for two decades and is now professor of piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nThis event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Mehfil Night: Afghan Rabab Performance and Workshop with Sannan Mahboob
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed artist Sannan Mahboob will lead an interactive workshop for students to learn more about the Afghan rabab\, a plucked lute instrument played across Asia for over a thousand years and Afghanistan’s national instrument. With the Taliban’s increased efforts to eliminate traditional cultural practices and art forms\, this workshop aims to pass on some seeds of that cultural knowledge to students in Minnesota\, who will learn fundamentals of rabab playing\, a brief history of the instrument\, and basic techniques. The workshop will lead into a jam session and catered biryani dinner. Participants are encouraged to bring any instruments they would like to play during the jam session! Co-sponsored by CSA!\, MSA\, College Ministry\, the Lutheran Center\, and the Music Department. This is a Pink Card Event. \nSannan Mahboob is a rabab artist\, composer\, music therapist\, and educator dedicated to carrying tradition into the modern music style. A student of the renowned rabab virtuoso\, Ustad Homayoun Sakhi\, Sannan has performed at major cultural platforms including the All Pakistan Music Conference and international stages like Ragas Live Festival for Pioneer Works\, in Brooklyn\, New York in the United States\, and performed at World Youth Festival Russia. He has collaborated on national projects such as “Ao Ehad Karain” for Coca-Cola Studio and worked across borders with diverse artists. Sannan is the founder of Staccato Academy and the creator of “Heal with Rabab\,” exploring the power of music in education and healing. He has also conducted music therapy seminars at NYU’s Nordoff Robbins Center and rabab workshops and performances at the Afghan Cultural Society in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. Through every performance and workshop\, he shares the Rabab as a living tradition — rooted in heritage\, open to the world. \nSannan Mahboob website: https://sannanmahboob.pk/ \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/isannanmahboob/?hl=en  \nRobert Lehmann (St. Olaf alum 2011) is a mixed-Filipino musician specializing primarily in keyboard-based instruments\, with significant experience in Arabic drumming. Robert’s keyboard work draws on his many years studying western classical music on the piano\, re-examining those sounds under new lights of improvised music and electronic synthesis. He gathers disparate influences across minimalist and classical piano\, house and electronica\, ambient\, jazz\, and film scores\, particularly drawing on Romantic and Impressionist era influences\, as well as pulling from classical and folk Arabic music from his years spent in several Twin Cities ensembles. This past summer\, Robert debuted an EP of songs based on his Lolo’s stories of growing up in the Philippines\, including his journey immigrating to the U.S.\, as well as Robert’s own experiences visiting his Lolo’s hometown with him\, reflecting on his own diaspora mixed-Filipino identity. Robert has begun the improvisation research process and is in the process of researching Filipino instruments\, folk music\, and rhythms in order to incorporate more of those elements throughout. The live version of this album is set to release in summer of 2026. \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/robbabobba/ \n
