SUMMARY:Guest Lecture: Yodels and Whispers — Singing Feminism in Recent Popular Music. 
DESCRIPTION:Alyssa Barna will present a lecture entitled Yodels and Whispers: Singing Feminism in Recent Popular Music.\n \nDevelopments in popular music are often driven by timbral and articulative practices\, both digital and acoustic. Female-coded voices\, in particular\, have driven recent trends such as whisperpop or vocal flips that are widely heard across professional records and in DIY online music-making (e.g.\, TikTok). Using the mimetic analysis of vocal physiology and focusing on the timbre of these voices\, in this presentation I argue that several female-coded artists in popular music have worked to reclaim the various expressive implications of their instrument through virtuosic techniques like whisper singing and yodeling. The techniques require extreme vocal prowess\, but the public reception of these techniques\, historically and presently\, has often been negative. I analyze sonic moments in popular music sung by female-coded voices from the last three decades to determine how these techniques\, while sometimes coded as a gendered “other\,” demonstrate feminist vocal empowerment. \nAlyssa Barna is a music theorist interested in the analysis of form\, timbre\, and the voice in recent popular music. As a public music theorist\, she aims to share theory and analysis with broader audiences and her current work in pedagogy focuses on connecting theory with technology\, media\, and culture. Barna is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities\, where she has taught since 2019. \nThis event is free and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Innovation in the Liberal Arts invites faculty and staff to come together to practice AI skepticism. This session offers participants two things: (1) a set of activities—digital and analog—that dismantle AI’s mystique and help reveal its operations clearly and tactilely\, and (2) several frameworks for facilitating ethical discussions about AI\, drawing on recent critical scholarship that has gotten lost in the hype. No matter if you use ChatGPT regularly or avoid it entirely\, this session invites you to share conversation about the conundrum that is AI\, reflecting on larger questions about how technology can be reimagined to support collective planetary flourishing. DESCRIPTION:The Norwegian Department welcomes Anna M. Peterson\, who will explore perceptions and attitudes toward American Indians present in Norway at the time of mass emigration\, as well as discuss what Norwegian immigrants had to say about Native American in the letters they wrote back home. The focus will be on three cases of Norwegian-American/ Native American interactions\, including: Norwegians and the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862\, Norwegians on the Spirit Lake Reservation in North Dakota\, and the Norwegian-American run Bethany Indian Mission outside Wittenberg\, Wisconsin. DESCRIPTION:The Lutheran Center for Faith\, Values\, and Community and College Ministry will welcome Ed Brown\, Secretary General of the Stefanus Alliance\, to campus on Tuesday\, September 23\, 2025.  The Stefanus Alliance is a global non-governmental organization that advocates for religious freedom throughout the world. \nThe work of the Stefanus Alliance resonates with the mission of St. Olaf College to create spaces for students to examine the impact of faith and values in their lives and society. In resonance with St. Olaf’s own identity as a college rooted in a particular religious tradition while striving to celebrate all the ways that students\, staff\, and faculty practice religion and spirituality\, the Stefanus Alliance advocates for people of all faiths who have had their religious rights violated out of their Christian foundation. \nBrown will host two public events while on campus: \nAt 11:10 a.m.\, Brown will speak in Boe Memorial Chapel during Daily Chapel. \nAt 12:00 p.m.\, Brown will host a lunch discussion for interested students\, staff\, and faculty. People are encouraged to bring their lunch to Buntrock Commons 220 for this time of open conversation.  \nBrown will also present in a class and meet with campus leaders whose work intersects with that of the Stefanus Alliance. SUMMARY:Traffic Noise and Artificial Light at Night: Human Impact on Frog Communication
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ximena E. Bernal will present a public lecture\, Traffic Noise and Artificial Light at Night: Human Impact on Frog Communication at 4 p.m.\, September 22\, in Regents Hall of Natural Sciences 150. This lecture will discuss the ways frogs and their eavesdropping enemies respond to sensory pollutants such as traffic noise and artificial light at night. Dr. Bernal is a Professor of Biology at Purdue University and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Her research focuses on animal communication\, the ecology and evolution of eavesdropping behavior\, and human impact on animal communication networks. She is also passionate about promoting equity and inclusion and has led the conversation about the role of machismo in excluding Latin-American women from science. This lecture is presented through Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar Program\, and is open to all members of the St. Olaf Community\, as well as the greater Northfield public.

Join fellow Oles for a thoughtful discussion of “True Biz” by Sara Novic. \nThe students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up\, pass their history finals\, and have politicians\, doctors\, and their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf\, where they’ll meet Charlie\, a rebellious transfer student who’s never met another deaf person before; Austin\, the school’s golden boy\, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing; and February\, the hearing headmistress\, a CODA (child of deaf adult(s)) who is fighting to keep her school open and her marriage intact\, but might not be able to do both. SUMMARY:Flaten Art Museum Opening Reception for Fall Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to a ceremonial blessing followed by an opening reception for  Gateway to Himalayan Art and Tashi Delek\, Minnesota!  At 5 p.m.\, Minneapolis Tibetan dance group Gyashae Rukag will lead a procession into the Center for Art and Dance and monks from the Gyuto Wheel of Dharma Monastery in Minneapolis will offer ritual blessings. The opening reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with brief remarks followed by light refreshments. This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available for visitors outside Buntrock Commons. \nFlaten Art Museum (FAM) at St. Olaf College will host Gateway to Himalayan Art in the fall of 2025. Organized by the Rubin Museum\, this exhibition offers an introduction to the forms\, concepts\, meanings\, and traditions of present-day Bhutan\, China\, India\, Mongolia\, Nepal and Tibet. Objects include thangka paintings\, mandala\, a sacred shrine cabinet\, and numerous statues and ritual objects such as a Tibetan prayer wheel\, vajra\, and bell. Thematic links include Tibetan medical practice\, the feminine divine as personified within the esoteric Buddhist tradition\, Tibetan Buddhist book traditions (including woodblocks for printing sacred texts)\, the processes and materials involved in painting a Buddhist thangka\, and casting a sacred sculpture. Our exhibition will be grounded in the living practices of the thriving Tibetan community in Minnesota. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Faculty and staff educators are invited to a private curator’s tour of the Gateway to Himalayan Art exhibition\, followed by a catered lunch in The Link. The exhibition will open to all on September 12\, 2025. \nRegister here by September 8\, 2025. \nGateway to Himalayan Art introduces the main forms\, concepts\, meanings\, and religious traditions of Himalayan art with objects from the collection of the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art\, New York. A large multimedia map at the start of the exhibition orients visitors to the greater Himalayan region\, which encompasses Indian\, Nepalese\, Bhutanese\, and Tibetan cultures as well as interrelated Mongolian and Chinese traditions. Gateway to Himalayan Art invites exploration of these diverse cultural spheres through exemplary objects presented in three thematic sections: Symbols and Meanings\, Materials and Technologies\, and Living Practices. It also includes voices from Himalayan artists and contemporaries\, along with connections to related digital content to learn more.

DESCRIPTION:The public is welcome to attend the Utech Seminars\, led by Mark Wrathall as part of the Kierkegaard Summer Institute 2025. Sponsored by the Kierkegaard Library\, this year’s seminars will be held in Regents Hall of Natural Sciences\, Room 290. The first seminar\, “Time\, Eternity\, and the Moment: Kierkegaard and the Temporality of Existence\,” will be held on Tuesday\, July 22\, from 2-4 p.m. This will be followed by “Kierkegaardian Temporality and 20th Century Phenomenologies of Time” on Wednesday\, July 23\, from 2-4 p.m. \nThis annual lecture series is held in honor of St. Olaf College alum George W. Utech ’53\, and made possible by a generous donation from the Utech family. With this endowed lectureship\, a world-renowned scholar is brought to the library each summer to deliver two public lectures on campus and to engage with Research Fellows attending our Kierkegaard Summer Institute. \nPlease see here fore more details. \n
