SUMMARY:Celebrate Asia Pasifika: Speaker Event (Eric Becklin and Valeng Cha) @ Northfield Public Library
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a talk titled “Broadening Vision: The Complexity of St. Olaf’s Early Chinese Students and Lutheran Missions\, 1918-1948” by Eric Becklin\, Visiting Instructor of Asian Studies and History.  \nValeng Cha\, former Director of Government\, Foundation\, and Corporate Relations\, will present “Hmong Oles: From Mountaintops to the Hilltops of St. Olaf”. \nAs part of St. Olaf’s 150th Anniversary Celebration and its commitment to highlighting lesser-known stories\, Eric Becklin and Valeng Cha will share insights into St. Olaf’s long-standing connections to Asia. Their talk at the Northfield Public Library will focus on two key narratives: the early history of Chinese international students\, which began in the 1910s\, and the experiences of Hmong students at St. Olaf\, particularly over the past few decades. \nBecklin (class of ’12) teaches on the history and geography of East Asia at St. Olaf College. His research specializes in the Lutheran Church of China and questions of indigeneity and globality of Christianity as well as local and transnational social networks that come with belonging to a religious community. He is defending his doctoral dissertation later this year on the subject of the Lutheran Church in China\, its formation as an institution\, and its connection of Chinese Christians with the world via their Lutheran identity. \nCha (class of ’95) is the former Director of Government\, Foundation\, and Corporate Relations at St. Olaf. Coming from an immigrant family\, he was a first-generation college student.  \nSponsored by Asian Studies Department\, Academic Civic Engagement\, Taylor Center for Equity and Inclusion\, and Northfield Public Library.

SUMMARY:The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are on sale now for the St. Olaf College Theater Department’s production of “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” at Kelsey Theater May 1–4\, 2025. https://wp.stolaf.edu/theater/tickets/ \nEdward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved by a little girl named Abilene\, but Edward doesn’t care. He is vain and self-centered. He has no interest in anyone other than himself. On an ocean voyage\, Edward is accidentally thrown overboard and sinks to the bottom of the sea. So begins his journey—a journey over which he has no control\, for he is a toy rabbit. He can neither move nor speak. As years pass by\, Edward meets many different people in many different situations: an older grieving couple who find comfort in Edward’s presence\, a hobo and his dog who introduce Edward to a whole community of homeless wanderers\, a farmer in need of a scarecrow\, a sad little boy and his very ill sister\, and finally a doll mender and an old doll who teach Edward an invaluable lesson. Through this miraculous journey\, Edward learns what it is to love\, what it is to lose that love\, and how to find the courage to love again. Based on Kate DiCamillo’s beautiful novel of the same name\, the play is a theatrical tour de force for a small ensemble of actors and musicians.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Asia Pasifika: Speaker Event (Prof. Hsiang-Lin Shih)
DESCRIPTION:Hsiang-Lin Shih\, Associate Professor of Asian Studies\, will present Fathers and Children: The Cao Family and the Early Medieval Chinese Court Poetry. \n“The parent–child relationship prescribed in the Analects of Confucius is so unique\, and the grief for parents is so distinct from any other kind\, that one who upholds the tradition may say\, as the scholar Amy Olberding concludes: “In my parents\, the world is made\, and in their deaths\, it comes undone.” Through this lens\, I trace the divergent paths that the early medieval Chinese poets Cao Pi\, Cao Zhi\, and Cao Rui take into a world that has come undone in their father/grandfather Cao Cao’s death. I observe how the bereaved children sustained themselves and their community—a family as well as a court—through poetry of emulation.” \nSponsored by Asian Studies Department\, Academic Civic Engagement\, Taylor Center for Equity and Inclusion\, and Northfield Public Library.

SUMMARY:Guest Masterclass: Zach Miller\, drumset
DESCRIPTION:Zach Miller is an educator\, composer\, and performer living in Minneapolis\, MN. Curiosity and exploration have defined the arc of his career\, exemplified in his recently released book SYNCO; a collection of advanced practice concepts for drumset. Zach has toured for 20 years with several national recording artists including Eric Hutchinson\, Sarah Groves and Jason Gray while maintaining an adjunct professor position at North Central University in downtown Minneapolis. Zach’s teaching offerings expand beyond the classroom. He has written articles for PAS’s Percussive Notes\, been a featured clinician at universities around the country\, developed a collection of social media challenges on handle\, @zmillermusic. Much of this content revolves around his area of expertise\, orchestrations of polymetric rhythmic relationships. As much as Zach wants to challenge musicians to expand their horizons of independence and rhythmic comprehension\, he wants everyone to always remember that THE WORK IS FUN! \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Manitou Singers and Viking Chorus Concert
DESCRIPTION:Manitou Singers\, conducted by Therees Hibbard\, and Viking Chorus\, conducted by Paolo Debuque\, present a joint Spring concert. \nComprised of alto and soprano voices from the first-year class\, the Manitou Singers is one of the most popular music organizations on the St. Olaf College campus. With a repertoire that ranges from sacred to secular to popular ballads\, the 100-voice choir sings at the opening worship service of the college as well as at various campus functions throughout the year. \nThe Viking Chorus of St. Olaf College is a choir of first-year tenors and basses who carry on a legacy of a chorus singing since its founding in 1935. Featuring a broad repertoire with an emphasis on sacred music\, the low voices of Viking sing motets\, cantata movements\, and anthems\, as well as contemporary choral pieces\, spirituals\, folksongs\, and more. \nLive stream available at https://www.stolaf.edu/multimedia/streams/upcoming/concerts.

SUMMARY:The Theological Weight Of Debt
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture by Associate Professor of Religion Devin Singh. Singh will be giving a lecture on how debt wields extraordinary power in societies\, shaping national economies and influencing individual choices. Unsurprisingly\, the concept has longstanding uses in religion. Sacred texts employ debt language to encourage social responsibility and trust\, while warning of debt’s dangers\, violent misadventures\, usurious risks\, and moral costs. This lecture examines Christian theological uses of debt in depictions of salvation to shed light on the ways debt has emerged as a master category for describing moral obligation and for regulating human relationships in modern society
