DESCRIPTION:All students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members are welcome to attend Dance for Every Body\, a movement jam/dance class that embraces the idea that each individual has a unique and powerful contribution to make\, and that our bodies are a powerful source of agency. The goal is for “every body” to find their level of challenge and comfort and partake according to their abilities\, and to appreciate the groups’ diversity as an attribute to their community. This is a movement class designed for the community\, so no prior dance experience is needed. Participants explore Urban Bush Women’s technique with close attention to breath\, weight\, call-and-response\, and polyrhythm. \nWhile we aren’t accepting formal registrations\, we do require a signed Liability Waiver in advance for anyone joining us from outside St. Olaf. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique glimpse into the creative process as 19 St. Olaf dance students share the culmination of their week-long intensive residency with the legendary Urban Bush Women (UBW). \nThroughout the week\, students have worked intimately with UBW BOLD facilitators in a Collab Lab\, using dance\, song\, and creative writing to synthesize their collective vision for the community. This informal “sharing” will showcase the artistic products born from that collaboration\, followed by a facilitator-guided conversation. \nAbout Urban Bush Women  \nURBAN BUSH WOMEN is a groundbreaking Black women-led theatrical dance company and social activism ensemble. Leveraging dance as a catalyst for social change & consistently seeking the broadest range of engagement possible has led UBW to train rigorously in dialogue facilitation\, analyzing racism and its manifestations in group dynamics\, and in the field of brain-compatible dance education (a holistic practice rather than dance instruction as mimicry)—in addition to concert dance technique & performance. \nAbout UBW’s Collab Lab \nUrban Bush Women facilitates artistic creation based on themes that emerge from the group. With an emphasis on dance and song\, they use various artistic genres\, including creative writing and visual art\, to process\, synthesize\, and communicate. DESCRIPTION:Through his kaleidoscopic career as a pianist\, conductor\, educator\, and curator of memorable musical moments\, Awadagin Pratt shines a light on voices of the past and present\, amplifies the diverse talents of today’s brightest creative minds\, and paves the way for a new generation of inventive musical artists. \nSince winning the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1992 and receiving a1994 Avery Fisher Career Grant\, Pratt has received acclaim for delivering “forceful\, imaginative\, and precisely tinted” performances (The Washington Post) and been hailed as “one of the great and distinctive American pianists and conductors of our time” (WGBH). He has appeared at addresses as familiar as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (at the invitation of the Clinton and Obama administrations) and Sesame Street (at the invitation of Big Bird): He has performed with the Boston and Chicago Symphony Orchestras\, the New York Philharmonic\, and many others; in solo recitals at the Kennedy Center\, Carnegie Hall\, and Lincoln Center; and in chamber music collaborations with cellist Zuill Bailey\, pianist Simone Dinnerstein\, and the Harlem and St. Lawrence String Quartets. His 2023 recording\, Stillpoint\, explores the truth and beauty in T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets through new works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Paola Prestini\, Peteris Vasks\, Jessie Montgomery\, Jonathan Bailey Holland\, Alvin Singleton\, and Judd Greenstein. \nHe became principal conductor of the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra in the 2023/24 season\, and he has conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh\, Georgia Symphony Orchestra (Tbilisi)\, and Bang on a Can at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He made his operatic debut leading Porgy and Bess with the Greensboro Opera (North Carolina). \nIn response to the murder of George Floyd\, Pratt created a podcast that evolved into a multimedia musical experience. Performed primarily on college campuses across the U.S.\, Awadagin Pratt: Black in America\, fuses music of Bach\, Messiaen\, and Liszt with still and moving pictures by filmmaker Alrick Brown and narration in which Pratt chronicles his life – from his time as a music student at the Peabody Conservatory through his ascent to international acclaim – through graphic accounts of numerous police stops and arrests he experienced for Driving While Black. In 2023\, a documentary version\, directed by Michelle Bauer Carpenter\, was screened at film festivals nationwide. \nPratt’s commitment to the next generation of pianists is evidenced by his work as founding director of the Next Generation Festival\, the Art of the Piano Foundation\, and the Nina Simone Piano Competition\, a new biennial competition that celebrates diversity in classical music. \nHe served as professor and artist in residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music for two decades and is now professor of piano at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nThis event is free and open to the public

DESCRIPTION:Presented through the Olaf W. and Juta R. Millert Memorial Speaker Series in Psychology\, Supporting Mental Health in Minoritized Families: From Basic Science to Community Interventions is a lecture from Professor and Chair of Human Development and Family Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin Gabriela Livas. Livas will present her team’s research on risk and resilience factors in predicting mental health and academic outcomes in minoritized adolescents with a focus on coping with cultural stress and familial resilience. Livas will then present results from three community interventions tailored to address these processes in minoritized families.  \nGabriela Livas is Professor and Chair of Human Development and Family Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths within minoritized communities. Livas employs community-engaged approaches to develop and test prevention and intervention programs tailored to the mental health and cultural needs of underserved communities. Her research has been funded by NIDA\, NIMH\, WT Grant\, and PCORI. She has served as the Vice President of Programming for the Society of Research on Adolescence\, co-chair of the Ethnic Racial Issues Committee of the Society of Research on Child Development\, and past chair of the Latinx Caucus of the Society of Research on Child Development.
