DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Aashish Kumar will screen his documentary film\, Go On\, Rituparna (31 mins\, Assamese with English subtitles)\, and participate in a panel discussion with student representatives from Celebrate South Asia (CSA) and the Trans Care Collective. The event will kick off with a reception in Viking Theater Lobby at 6 p.m. before the screening begins. \nGo On Rituparna \n“Xun” to her loving Mother\, and “Piku” or “Ritu” to friends\, Rituparna Neog has blazed a trail for queer and trans rights\, gender justice\, and access to free libraries in her native Assam and other parts of India. Rituparna’s story is the first in a series of four stories from Tier II cities in India directed and produced by Aashish Kumar as part of a two-year Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship. The series is offered in the hope of inspiring compassion\, respect\, and support for gender and sexual diversity within the South Asian community. \nAashish Kumar (he/him) is a tenured Full Professor of Television and Immersive Media in the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University in Hempstead\, New York. His areas of expertise include documentary\, interactive and immersive media\, participatory media\, and storytelling for social change. SUMMARY:FGC/AAUP Shared Governance Session
DESCRIPTION:The faculty of St. Olaf College are invited to attend training session on shared governance provided by a senior program officer from AAUP and sponsored by the college’s AAUP chapter and the Faculty Governance Committee. \nThis session supports our collective work toward changes to faculty governance and shared governance. Here are some of the topics Mark Criley\, the senior program officer from the Department of Academic Freedom\, Tenure\, & Governance at the national AAUP office\, has been asked to address: \n\nGeneral introduction to shared governance: What is it? What is its basis in law and norms? Why does it matter for higher education overall?\nProcess: Are there tested “hacks” — practical dos and don’ts\, prescribed ways of proceeding — for negotiating and transitioning into new modes of governance?\nWhat does conventional wisdom say about best practices for faculty engagement with boards of trustees? (Voting privileges on board committees or full board? Structured meetings between faculty senate/council and board? Other?)\nWhat AAUP documents contain the most recent guidance on principles of shared governance? Should we consult any of them beforehand?\n\nPlease reach out to FGC members or the AAUP chapter members with any questions or comments. If you would like to familiarize yourself with the documents that frame shared governance at St. Olaf College\, take a look at the college bylaws and the faculty manual.

SUMMARY:St. Olaf Virtual Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the St. Olaf Virtual Book Club for a Discussion of An Immense World by Ed Yong! \nFounded and led by alumni in the DC/Baltimore area\, this book club is open to all St. Olaf graduates and friends of the college. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just love discussing great books\, we’d love to have you join us! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent: St. Olaf Virtual Book Club\nBook: An Immense World by Ed Yong\nDate: Saturday\, March 21\, 2026\nTime: 10 a.m. to Noon EST (US and Canada) via Zoom\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Immense World \nIn An Immense World\, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses\, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent\, waves of electromagnetism\, and pulses of pressure that surround us. We encounter beetles that are drawn to fires\, turtles that can track the Earth’s magnetic fields\, fish that fill rivers with electrical messages\, and even humans who wield sonar like bats. We discover that a crocodile’s scaly face is as sensitive as a lover’s fingertips\, that the eyes of a giant squid evolved to see sparkling whales\, that plants thrum with the inaudible songs of courting bugs\, and that even simple scallops have complex vision. We learn what bees see in flowers\, what songbirds hear in their tunes\, and what dogs smell on the street. We listen to stories of pivotal discoveries in the field\, while looking ahead at the many mysteries that remain unsolved. \nFunny\, rigorous\, and suffused with the joy of discovery\, An Immense World takes us on what Marcel Proust called “the only true voyage . . . not to visit strange lands\, but to possess other eyes.” \nWINNER OF THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL • FINALIST FOR THE KIRKUS PRIZE • FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O. WILSON AWARD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom meeting details will be provided via email after registration. \nQuestions: Michele Foss ’97 \nPlease note that the Alumni-Led St. Olaf Virtual Book Club is a volunteer initiative founded by DC/Baltimore area alumni. The gatherings are designed to be casual and social\, with conversations flowing organically from the attendees. This book club operates independently\, and its book selections are not chosen by St. Olaf College.

SUMMARY:Mehfil Night: Afghan Rabab Performance and Workshop with Sannan Mahboob
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed artist Sannan Mahboob will lead an interactive workshop for students to learn more about the Afghan rabab\, a plucked lute instrument played across Asia for over a thousand years and Afghanistan’s national instrument. With the Taliban’s increased efforts to eliminate traditional cultural practices and art forms\, this workshop aims to pass on some seeds of that cultural knowledge to students in Minnesota\, who will learn fundamentals of rabab playing\, a brief history of the instrument\, and basic techniques. The workshop will lead into a jam session and catered biryani dinner. Participants are encouraged to bring any instruments they would like to play during the jam session! Co-sponsored by CSA!\, MSA\, College Ministry\, the Lutheran Center\, and the Music Department. This is a Pink Card Event. \nSannan Mahboob is a rabab artist\, composer\, music therapist\, and educator dedicated to carrying tradition into the modern music style. A student of the renowned rabab virtuoso\, Ustad Homayoun Sakhi\, Sannan has performed at major cultural platforms including the All Pakistan Music Conference and international stages like Ragas Live Festival for Pioneer Works\, in Brooklyn\, New York in the United States\, and performed at World Youth Festival Russia. He has collaborated on national projects such as “Ao Ehad Karain” for Coca-Cola Studio and worked across borders with diverse artists. Sannan is the founder of Staccato Academy and the creator of “Heal with Rabab\,” exploring the power of music in education and healing. He has also conducted music therapy seminars at NYU’s Nordoff Robbins Center and rabab workshops and performances at the Afghan Cultural Society in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. Through every performance and workshop\, he shares the Rabab as a living tradition — rooted in heritage\, open to the world. \nSannan Mahboob website: https://sannanmahboob.pk/ \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/isannanmahboob/?hl=en  \nRobert Lehmann (St. Olaf alum 2011) is a mixed-Filipino musician specializing primarily in keyboard-based instruments\, with significant experience in Arabic drumming. Robert’s keyboard work draws on his many years studying western classical music on the piano\, re-examining those sounds under new lights of improvised music and electronic synthesis. He gathers disparate influences across minimalist and classical piano\, house and electronica\, ambient\, jazz\, and film scores\, particularly drawing on Romantic and Impressionist era influences\, as well as pulling from classical and folk Arabic music from his years spent in several Twin Cities ensembles. This past summer\, Robert debuted an EP of songs based on his Lolo’s stories of growing up in the Philippines\, including his journey immigrating to the U.S.\, as well as Robert’s own experiences visiting his Lolo’s hometown with him\, reflecting on his own diaspora mixed-Filipino identity. Robert has begun the improvisation research process and is in the process of researching Filipino instruments\, folk music\, and rhythms in order to incorporate more of those elements throughout. The live version of this album is set to release in summer of 2026. \nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/robbabobba/ \n

SUMMARY:A Conversation on the Future of Teaching Museums
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean for a museum to truly teach? Join Flaten Art Museum Director Jane Becker Nelson in conversation with two leading voices in contemporary museum practice — a practitioner with decades of institutional experience and a scholar-educator exploring how museums matter today. Together\, they’ll examine the evolving challenges and possibilities facing teaching museums. \nDavid E. Little is the founder of David E. Little Art Consulting\, LLC\, and brings over 25 years of senior leadership at some of the country’s most prominent institutions — including the International Center of Photography\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art — to questions of museum strategy\, education\, and the public role of art. \nChristina M. Spiker is an Assistant Professor of Art and Art History and Asian Studies at St. Olaf College. Her research examines modern Japanese art and visual culture\, with a focus on representations of and by the Indigenous Ainu. Her work extends into museum studies and pedagogy\, exploring how exhibitions shape public understandings of Indigenous cultures and how museums can more critically engage with issues of representation\, interpretation\, and cultural heritage.  \nFree and open to the public. Light refreshments provided. \nFollowing the talk\, guests are welcome to explore the Flaten Art Museum. Galleries will remain open until 6 p.m. \n

SUMMARY:Roots and Branches: Reflections on a Journey from St. Olaf through Public Health\, Community\, and Family
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Novak ’08 will return to campus to reflect on the path her life and work have taken since graduation. In this personal talk\, she will share some of the moments that shaped her journey after leaving The Hill\, from working at mobile clinics serving migrant agricultural workers in Iowa in the aftermath of the largest worksite immigration raid in U.S. history\, to (re)connecting with the Catholic Worker movement while studying at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.\n\nNovak will discuss how these experiences informed her doctoral research in social epidemiology\, including documenting the public health fallout of immigration enforcement\, and how living in a Catholic Worker house during her doctoral studies kept her from getting buried too deep “in the books”. Later\, she returned to her hometown in Iowa to conduct research alongside community organizations and leaders working for immigrant rights\, worker justice\, and community health.\n\nLastly\, Novak will reflect on her experience becoming a parent to two children\, including one with disabilities and medical complexities. This experience has deepened her understanding of care\, interdependence\, and the urgency of disability justice\, and is spurring another evolution in her life\, family\, and vocation.\n\nThrough these stories\, Novak will reflect on the joys and challenges of following a path that hasn’t always been linear\, and on her effort to honor the values of community\, justice\, and care as she moves through the seasons of life.\n\n\n\n\nNicole Novak is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science degree in Medical Anthropology and Global Health Science from the University of Oxford\, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar. She graduated from St. Olaf College with majors in Spanish\, Hispanic Studies and Environmental Studies. Nicole has worked with numerous community organizations\, including the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa\, the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa\, the Prairielands Freedom Fund\, and California Latinas for Reproductive Justice\, to conduct research and public engagement related to community health\, immigration enforcement\, civil rights and reproductive justice.

It is a partnership between the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa (LULAC—the nation’s oldest and largest Hispanic civil rights organization)\, and the University of Iowa and co-led by 3 principal investigators: Julianna Pacheco (University of Iowa\, Department of Political Science)\, Nicole Novak (University of Iowa\, Department of Community and Behavioral Health)\, and Nicholas Salazar (League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa\, LULAC).\n\nOur project is heavily guided by a Community Advisory Board (CAB) of 8 LULAC leaders from 7 councils throughout the state of Iowa. LULAC leaders are intimately familiar with the landscape for civic engagement and voting rights in their specific communities and support their Latina/o and immigrant neighbors in becoming civically and politically engaged.\n\nOur research is focused on solutions to\, and remedies for\, policies that negatively impact community health for Latinos living in Iowa. We seek to better understand how political power (or lack thereof) contributes to health equity. We center voices from the Latinx community who are most affected by a lack of political representation. We envision an Iowa where all residents feel motivated and empowered to improve their communities\, to run for office\, and to be civically engaged\, regardless of race\, language\, or place of birth.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Panelists:\n\nNick Salazar currently serves as the president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council 371 in Muscatine\, Iowa. He is also the president of the board of the Diversity Service Center of Iowa\, an immigrant legal services organization in Muscatine. In addition to his community leadership\, Salazar works in Muscatine as a Supply Chain Manager at Kraft Heinz\, the same company his family members worked for when they moved to Iowa from Texas in the 1960s. Salazar’s nominators (for the award as an Iowa Public Health Hero\, an award that he received in 2025) wrote that he emerged as a public health leader during the COVID-19 pandemic\, when he and other LULAC leaders were some of the first Iowans to sound the alarm about risk to meatpacking workers who were classed as essential workers and continued working in close quarters with limited protections\, especially in the early days of the pandemic. Salazar and other LULAC leaders advocated for safer working conditions\, access to testing and vaccination\, and expanded access to pandemic relief resources. More recently\, he has worked with University of Iowa faculty members Nicole Novak and Julianna Pacheco on the Iowa Vital Voices Project\, a participatory action research project focused on civic engagement and political voice as a root determinant of health for Latinos in Iowa.\n\nNicole Novak is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Novak has worked with numerous community organizations\, including the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa\, the Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa\, the Prairielands Freedom Fund\, and California Latinas for Reproductive Justice\, to conduct research and public engagement related to community health\, immigration enforcement\, civil rights and reproductive justice.\n\nModerator: Professor Emily Carroll\, Department of Nursing and HealthFinders Collaborative

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Join or Die
DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Club\, the Svoboda Center for Civic Engagement at St. Olaf College\, and the Northfield Public Library\, along with other partners\, are joining forces to host a free screening of the 2023 documentary film\, “Join or Die” at St. Olaf College’s Viking Theater. \nJoin or Die is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary\, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam\, whose groundbreaking “Bowling Alone” research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton\, Pete Buttigieg\, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr.\, Raj Chetty\, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country\, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And\, most importantly… What can we do about it? \nDirected by Rebecca Davis & Pete Davis\n93 minutes // English // 2024 \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion. Attendees will also have a chance to learn from local organizations what opportunities they have for you to join. Light refreshments will be provided. \nStudents\, faculty\, and staff are kindly encouraged to pre-register at the Library’s website here.

SUMMARY:Guest Recital: The Nois Saxophone Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Take your preconceived notions of ‘noise’ and toss them out the window. Equal parts ‘fiendishly good and fiendishly goofy.'”(Chicago Tribune) \n~Nois is a Chicago-based saxophone quartet dedicated to connecting with diverse audiences through the creation of new work. Since its founding in 2016\, “~Nois continues to legitimize the saxophone quartet as a premier ensemble formation for classical music” (thank you Brutal New Music) through commissioning repertoire that is thought-provoking\, engaging\, and honestly just really good\, by some of today’s most inspiring compositional voices. \nThere will also be a Masterclass and “reading session” of student compositions on Saturday\, April 18 from 10 – 12 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall. \nBoth events are free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Pedagogies of Abolition Keynote Event
DESCRIPTION:The Pedagogies of Abolition Keynote Event will feature a roundtable discussion with leading scholars about abolitionist approaches to education inside and outside the academy. How can educators use pedagogies derived from social movements within their classrooms? What does socially-engaged pedagogy look like in the belly of the beast? Joining St. Olaf’s own Assistant Professor of Race\, Ethnic\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies Lau Malaver and Assistant Professor of History Jaden Janak are Qui Alexander\, Assistant Professor of Gender\, Sexuality\, and Trans Studies at the University of Toronto\, and Page Regan\, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education and Feminist & Gender Studies at Colorado College.
