In this feature documentary\, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam\, whose groundbreaking “Bowling Alone” research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton\, Pete Buttigieg\, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr.\, Raj Chetty\, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country\, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? Preceding the event will be a reception for the guests and the St. Olaf community at 5:30 p.m. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Viking Theater. \nThis event is sponsored by the departments of Race\, Ethnic Studies\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies and History. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Young Adult Faith and Climate Summit\, the public is invited to attend the opening plenary session “The ELCA’s Climate Work: Faithful Advocacy in Challenging Times” led by Christine Moffett\, ELCA Environmental Policy Specialist. Christine Moffet (she/her) serves as the Program Director for Environment and Energy Policy with the Witness in Society\, D.C. office-based team\, within the Service and Justice unit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Christine brings a background in both environmental science and political science. She holds a Master of Political Science Degree from the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam in Global Environmental Governance\, Climate Change and Sustainability. In addition\, she brings experience conducting community needs assessments in accompaniment with tribal nations. In this role with the ELCA\, she advocates to the federal government around issues of stewardship of creation\, environmental justice\, climate change\, sustainability\, among others\, all guided by ELCA social teachings. \nThe plenary will take place at 10 a.m. in Boe Chapel and will include a Panel Conversation on Troubled Hope & Binocular Vision. Following the Q&A\, guests are invited to Boe Plaza (rain location: Tomson Hall) for light refreshments.

The two-day event aims to uplift and celebrate women composers and conductors\, and music composed for soprano and alto voices.  \nThe weekend will consist of two primary events\, a symposium for conductors and composers on Saturday\, April 25\, and a collaborative performance in Boe Memorial Chapel on Sunday\, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.. The performance is free and open to the public\, with no tickets required\, and will also be streamed online. \n“Throughout history\, women’s voices lifted in song have brought forth change through demonstration\, protest\, and recognition of the need for equity and justice for every voice and gender in our world\,” says Hibbard. “Our ComposeHER\, ConductHER Symposium and Festival provides a forum to lift up and amplify the voices of these traditionally under-represented communities.” \nThe ComposeHER\, ConductHER Festival Concert on April 26 will take place in Boe Memorial Chapel at 3:30 p.m. The Manitou Singers will be joined by See Change Treble Choir\, Maple Grove High School’s Voce\, Northfield High School’s Uno Vox\, Minnehaha Academy’s Cantabile\, and Northfield Youth Choir’s Anima. Each choir will sing individually\, and then in collaboration with Manitou Singers on one selection each\, then join as a massed choir led by Kathy Saltzman Romey to end the program. The concert will feature performances of several pieces from new and past composition commissions and ACDA consortiums for Soprano-Alto choirs\, along with a large joint performance of Jocelyn Hagen’s “JOY\,” a work based on poetry by Sara Teasdale\, and originally commissioned for the 2008 Minnesota All-State Women’s Choir.

Former NLC Artistic Director David Cherwien joins as guest organist to mark 40 years of the National Lutheran Choir. Works by J.S. Bach\, F. Melius Christiansen\, Larry Fleming\, and David Cherwien bloom alongside new pieces by Earlene Rentz and Jennaya Robison. The concert concludes with a festival chorus of alumni and friends—celebrating four decades of song and the promise of many more to come as we proclaim\, “For all that has been\, Thank you.
