SUMMARY:Traffic Noise and Artificial Light at Night: Human Impact on Frog Communication
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ximena E. Bernal will present a public lecture\, Traffic Noise and Artificial Light at Night: Human Impact on Frog Communication at 4 p.m.\, September 22\, in Regents Hall of Natural Sciences 150. This lecture will discuss the ways frogs and their eavesdropping enemies respond to sensory pollutants such as traffic noise and artificial light at night. Dr. Bernal is a Professor of Biology at Purdue University and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Her research focuses on animal communication\, the ecology and evolution of eavesdropping behavior\, and human impact on animal communication networks. She is also passionate about promoting equity and inclusion and has led the conversation about the role of machismo in excluding Latin-American women from science. This lecture is presented through Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar Program\, and is open to all members of the St. Olaf Community\, as well as the greater Northfield public.

SUMMARY:Stefanus Alliance: A conversation with Ed Brown
DESCRIPTION:The Lutheran Center for Faith\, Values\, and Community and College Ministry will welcome Ed Brown\, Secretary General of the Stefanus Alliance\, to campus on Tuesday\, September 23\, 2025.  The Stefanus Alliance is a global non-governmental organization that advocates for religious freedom throughout the world. \nThe work of the Stefanus Alliance resonates with the mission of St. Olaf College to create spaces for students to examine the impact of faith and values in their lives and society. In resonance with St. Olaf’s own identity as a college rooted in a particular religious tradition while striving to celebrate all the ways that students\, staff\, and faculty practice religion and spirituality\, the Stefanus Alliance advocates for people of all faiths who have had their religious rights violated out of their Christian foundation. \nBrown will host two public events while on campus: \nAt 11:10 a.m.\, Brown will speak in Boe Memorial Chapel during Daily Chapel. \nAt 12:00 p.m.\, Brown will host a lunch discussion for interested students\, staff\, and faculty. People are encouraged to bring their lunch to Buntrock Commons 220 for this time of open conversation.  \nBrown will also present in a class and meet with campus leaders whose work intersects with that of the Stefanus Alliance. For more information\, please see the events section on the Lutheran Center webpage.

DESCRIPTION:The Fox and Beggar Theater presents ‘TIGRE! TIGRE!’\, an operetta\, on September 26 at 7 p.m. The performance will take place outside on the quad in front of Tomson. In case of rain\, the show will be delayed until the following day\, but if the ground is merely wet\, it will be performed in the vicinity of Tomson. This event is open to the public\, and donations are welcome. \nCombining puppetry\, traditional clown theater\, and a live score influenced by everything from Medieval court music to Gilbert & Sullivan\, “TIGRE! TIGRE!” explores humanity’s absurd relationship to technology while asking the fundamental question: what drives us to perpetually open new doors that we know we won’t be able to close? Visit https://www.foxandbeggar.org/tigre for more information.

SUMMARY:Coming Together to Practice AI Skepticism
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Innovation in the Liberal Arts invites faculty and staff to come together to practice AI skepticism. This session offers participants two things: (1) a set of activities—digital and analog—that dismantle AI’s mystique and help reveal its operations clearly and tactilely\, and (2) several frameworks for facilitating ethical discussions about AI\, drawing on recent critical scholarship that has gotten lost in the hype. No matter if you use ChatGPT regularly or avoid it entirely\, this session invites you to share conversation about the conundrum that is AI\, reflecting on larger questions about how technology can be reimagined to support collective planetary flourishing. For this session\, please read this short essay by Dan McQuillan and bring a pencil\, paper\, and your favorite book for a brief activity. \nThis workshop will be led by Assistant Professor Ryan Eichberger\, who teaches rhetoric and digital studies in the English Department. \nPlease RSVP for this event here.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture: Yodels and Whispers — Singing Feminism in Recent Popular Music.
DESCRIPTION:Alyssa Barna will present a lecture entitled Yodels and Whispers: Singing Feminism in Recent Popular Music.\n \nDevelopments in popular music are often driven by timbral and articulative practices\, both digital and acoustic. Female-coded voices\, in particular\, have driven recent trends such as whisperpop or vocal flips that are widely heard across professional records and in DIY online music-making (e.g.\, TikTok). Using the mimetic analysis of vocal physiology and focusing on the timbre of these voices\, in this presentation I argue that several female-coded artists in popular music have worked to reclaim the various expressive implications of their instrument through virtuosic techniques like whisper singing and yodeling. The techniques require extreme vocal prowess\, but the public reception of these techniques\, historically and presently\, has often been negative. I analyze sonic moments in popular music sung by female-coded voices from the last three decades to determine how these techniques\, while sometimes coded as a gendered “other\,” demonstrate feminist vocal empowerment. \nAlyssa Barna is a music theorist interested in the analysis of form\, timbre\, and the voice in recent popular music. As a public music theorist\, she aims to share theory and analysis with broader audiences and her current work in pedagogy focuses on connecting theory with technology\, media\, and culture. Barna is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities\, where she has taught since 2019. \nThis event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Guest Recital/Demo - Khari Joyner\, cello
DESCRIPTION:Cellist Khari Joyner will present a solo demo recital. This event is free and open to the public. \n“Khari Joyner is one of the most exciting young musicians on the classical scene.. He gets a rich sound out of the cello that is even across the range from fortissimo to harmonics. Coupled with his perfect intonation\, he made Berio’s complex ideas sound marvelously clear\, almost song-like. The rhythms he rapped out with his hands were as musical as can be.”\n–George Grella\, New York Classical Review\, on Berio’s Sequenza XIV

SUMMARY:Doubt: A Parable
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome to attend the Theater Department’s performances of Doubt: A Parable\, performed by St. Olaf students. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe main message of John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt: A Parable is that doubt\, rather than certainty\, requires courage and is essential for moral integrity and genuine faith.  The play explores how clinging to certainty can be destructive and encourages audiences to embrace skepticism and moral uncertainty in a world where clear resolutions are often lacking. It also touches on themes of power\, authority\, abuse\, and racial tensions within the strict hierarchy of a Catholic school in the 1960s.

Cheer on Oles at football and soccer\, catch the St. Olaf Band in the evening\, and pop into the archives exhibit for a memory lane moment. Wander the Campus Green for lawn games\, pumpkin painting\, and treats (apple tasting\, boba samples\, popcorn\, cotton candy). Bring your friends and enjoy a Saturday packed with fun on the Hill.. \nMore about the collection: The LGBTQ+ Oles Oral History Project launched in August 2024 as part of the Honest Storytelling Project for St. Olaf’s sesquicentennial. Inspired to find queer and trans histories of St. Olaf that were hidden in plain sight\, Averill Earls (Associate Professor of History) and Jaden Janak (Assistant Professor of History) embarked on a journey to talk to as many alumni as they could. In just over 12 months and with the help of five student researchers\, they have collected over 50 oral histories from LGBTQ+ alumni\, from the class of 1966 to the class of 2026. Participants were invited to tell their stories in sessions ranging from one to three hours\, then invited to review the transcript before donating it to the College Archives. In addition to oral histories\, the LGBTQ+ Oles Oral History Project team have been working with alumni to collect important ephemera that sheds light on queer and trans life and love at St. Olaf. This is a living collection\, which the research team will continue to grow indefinitely\, as long as alumni and other members of the St. Olaf community are willing to share their stories. It is our goal that this archive be a shining example of the contributions\, lives\, and histories of LGBTQ+ Oles\, who deserve to be valued and have their stories be told.

SUMMARY:The Norwegian Department’s 125th Anniversary Celebration: The Norwegian Discovery of America and the Creation of a Norway in America
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture by Henrik Olav Mathiesen\, which addresses two key questions about Norwegians in America: why they came\, and how they balanced their unique culture with their developing American identity. By examining pre-emigration Norwegian society and how immigrants sought to belong as Norwegians in America\, Mathiesen will reveal how immigrants forged a new American identity through their unique cultural traditions. \nThe first 125 students will also receive a commemorative gift! \nMathiesen has spent years uncovering emigrant letters printed in the homeland press. He has also researched aspects of Norwegian American identity and belonging. In 2025\, he worked with the national Library of Norway to design the exhibition “Gone West: Dreaming of a Better Life in America.”
