Comprised of alto and soprano voices from the first-year class\, the Manitou Singers is one of the most popular music organizations on the St. Olaf College campus. With a repertoire that ranges from sacred to secular to popular ballads\, the 100-voice choir sings at the opening worship service of the college as well as at various campus functions throughout the year. \nSunday Worship is a time of inspiration and worship for body\, mind\, and spirit; a meaningful beginning to a new week. DESCRIPTION:Students\, faculty\, staff are all welcome to attend the 45th Eunice Belgum Lectures. This year’s lecturer is Regina Rini. \nRegina Rini’s lecture “Hobbes and the egalitarian tragedy of science” from vaccines to climate change — skeptics ask: why does some intellectual elite get to tell us what to think? We can best understand the frustrating dilemma of scientific authority by looking back to a time when modern science emerged alongside modern views on political authority. \nEach year for three decades the philosophy department has sponsored the Belgum Lectures\, which honor the memory of Eunice Belgum\, who graduated from St. Olaf College in 1967. The lecture series was established in the hope that Eunice’s tragic death in 1977 would not end her impact on the profession\, teaching\, and scholarship she loved so much. While the lectures may be on any topic\, the philosophy department makes a special effort to choose topics in areas of special interest to Eunice\, namely ethics\, philosophy of mind\, and feminism. These lectures are supported by a fund established by Eunice’s family and friends. \nReception to follow.

SUMMARY:Guest Lecture: Artemisia Gentileschi and the Ghost of Michelangelo
DESCRIPTION:One of the most esteemed artists of the seventeenth century\, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1654?) began forging her reputation as the era’s premier painter of heroic yet life-like female nudes at the precocious age of seventeen. In doing so\, she was consciously following in the steps of one of the greatest artists of the previous century: Michelangelo Buonarroti. Michelangelo’s nephew\, known as Michelangelo Buonarroti Jr.\, recognized this spiritual connection when he met Artemisia in Florence. He reserved a special affection for her\, even serving as godfather to her child. Drawn from the archives of the Buonarroti and the Medici court\, this talk will explore the surprising parallels between these two irascible\, brilliant\, and independently minded artists\, tracing a trail from Rome to Malta\, to Florence\, and finally to Indianapolis. \n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nSheila Barker\, an art historian\, took her BA at Amherst and completed an MA and a PhD at Columbia University. She is the founding director of the Jane Fortune Research Program on Women Artists at the Medici Archive Project\, the world’s first archival research program dedicated to women artists. That program has now been rebranded as the Center for Women in Renaissance Archives\, with the mission of harnessing technology to expand access to archival information about women of the past. In 2021\, she curated an exhibition at Palazzo Pitti on the 17th-century woman artist Giovanna Garzoni. In addition to numerous articles and her three edited volumes (Artemisia Gentileschi in a Changing Light\, Women Artists in Early Modern Italy\, and Artiste nel chiostro)\, she also authored the leading biography on Artemisia Gentileschi\, published by Getty Publications\, and reviewed in the LA Times and the Wall Street Journal.

SUMMARY:46th Annual Eunice Belgum Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Students\, faculty\, staff are all welcome to attend the 46th Eunice Belgum Lectures. This year’s lecturer is Regina Rini. \nRegina Rini’s lecture is titled “Debate: The all-consuming crucible”. When we disagree\, we should try to work out the truth. For that we have debate. But the meaning of debate is also debatable\, and this lecture arranges just such a clash of minds across time and space\, between the 19th century English philosopher John Stuart Mill and the classical Buddhist scholar Nāgārjuna. \nEach year for three decades the philosophy department has sponsored the Belgum Lectures\, which honor the memory of Eunice Belgum\, who graduated from St. Olaf College in 1967. The lecture series was established in the hope that Eunice’s tragic death in 1977 would not end her impact on the profession\, teaching\, and scholarship she loved so much. While the lectures may be on any topic\, the philosophy department makes a special effort to choose topics in areas of special interest to Eunice\, namely ethics\, philosophy of mind\, and feminism. These lectures are supported by a fund established by Eunice’s family and friends

This event is open to the public. \nFounded in 1891\, the St. Olaf Band is the oldest music organization at St. Olaf College\, a campus internationally renowned for its high caliber of music ensembles. DESCRIPTION:Northfield and St. Olaf College community members are invited to attend the Minnesota premiere of the documentary film “Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea\,” followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. \nThe documentary film follows the life and work of artist and Marine H.C. (“Cliff”) Westermann\, voice-acted by four-time Academy-Award nominee Ed Harris\, conceived and directed by Leslie Buchbinder\, and featuring interviews with Ed Ruscha\, Frank Gehry\, and many others. As a veteran of World War II and the Korean War who struggled with the ramifications of modern warfare\, Westermann’s dramatic personal history can be traced through his beguiling\, surreal artworks.
