Seeing Math

Seeing Math is inspired by The Arnold Ostebee ’72 and Kay Smith Endowed Fund for Mathematical Art. Established in 2014, this fund supports the acquisition and display of mathematically themed art at St. Olaf College. Mathematics has been a profound source of inspiration for artists across time and cultures. In Seeing Math, Daniel Dean, Tracy Krumm, Emily Lynch-Victory, Ben Moren, Margaret Pezalla-Granlund, and Roman Verostko address a number of mathematical concepts, including infinity, algorithms, geometry, and the fourth dimension.

Mathematics has been a profound source of inspiration for artists across time and cultures. In Seeing Math, six contemporary artists address a number of mathematical concepts, including infinity, algorithms, geometry, and the fourth dimension. Some are firmly rooted in mathematical concepts, while other works express a more poetic relationship to mathematical reasoning.

For 21 years Meg Ojala, Professor of Art at St. Olaf College, has been making landscape photographs within a small radius around her home and studio in Dundas, Minnesota. This exhibition celebrates Ojala’s teaching career and committed artistic practice as it highlights her latest photographic inquiry: an exploration of bogs and fens. Acidic wetlands with complex ecosystems, bogs and fens are inherently unstable and therefore ambiguous and bewildering.
