Through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.edu\/campaign\">For the Hill and Beyond<\/a>, Oles like <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/campaign\/2018\/02\/larry-67-and-pam-satek-fueling-a-passion-for-research\/\">Larry Satek &#8217;67<\/a> are building funds to support this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/grC-ETwSPYw\">high-impact practice<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>St. Olaf\u2019s Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry (CURI) program engages more than 125 Oles each summer who pursue dedicated research and receive stipends, housing, supplies, and conference and travel support.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor of Chemistry Dipannita Kalyani has engaged 50 Oles through CURI and other programs in discovering more cost-effective and sustainable catalysts to make molecular architectures used in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. These students gain valuable experience with far-ranging impact \u2014 half are co-authors on 10 publications; nearly all have presented at national conferences. Many go on to earn post-graduate degrees and competitive employment in chemistry and health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOles are ahead of the curve because of these experiences,\u201d says Kalyani. \u201cSummer gives them the time needed to be thoroughly immersed in research and learn if they truly enjoy being open to risk and discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong><em>\u201cThese students are very capable \u2014 this is graduate-level work. Following publication of her research and an internship with Merck, she will pursue a PhD in Chemistry.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kalyani sections larger projects into smaller ones, enabling Oles to work together while directing key segments. Experienced students lead and train new researchers, who guide the next. It\u2019s a successful approach that earned Kalyani a prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award \u2014 one of the grants she\u2019s successively secured for mentored research.<\/p>\n<p>Mckenna Hanson \u201918 led an investigation of nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between azoles and aryl nitriles. Her team\u2019s findings were published in the American Chemical Society journal <em>Organic Letters<\/em>. Following her work in Kalyani\u2019s group she secured a competitive internship with pharmaceutical leader Merck, and will soon hear back from her recent applications to Ph.D. programs in chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no doubt I got that internship because of my experience,\u201d says Hanson. \u201cAs I led the project, I could speak easily about our data, process, obstacles, and results, compared to undergrads at other schools who typically work under a research assistant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are given lots of responsibilities,\u201d says Ryan Walser-Kuntz \u201918. \u201cProfessor Kalyani mentors us from step one. We gain confidence as we do more, and by the end, we design and pursue our own experiments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students are very capable \u2014 this is graduate-level work.
