Through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.edu\/campaign\">For the Hill and Beyond<\/a>, Oles are building funds to support this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/grC-ETwSPYw\">high-impact practice<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During the academic year, directed research courses enable small student groups to collaborate with faculty and earn credit. Many engage with \u201cbig data\u201d \u2014 massive digital data sets increasingly available for researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you can do in research has changed rapidly,\u201d says Chair and Associate Professor of Economics Paul Wojick. Supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/campaign\/2018\/02\/honoring-excellence-frank-gery-endowed-fund-for-economics\/\">Frank Gery Endowed Fund<\/a>, Wojick and his students explored how market liquidity informs the length of recessionary cycles, including the Great Recession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing Federal Reserve data, we found that funds flowed primarily from the stock then bond markets into the treasury market, but almost directly into its short end,\u201d says Wojick. \u201cThis began almost six months before the crisis, suggesting that institutional investors sought safety long before it actually hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Economics and mathematics major Matthew Damhof \u201918 contributed to the team\u2019s statistical data analysis. \u201cI learned how to use data to see concepts that are otherwise difficult to observe. With an entire class focused on one project we get more guidance how to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><em><strong>I haven\u2019t done a project of this intensity or sophistication, and not with health data. We do a lot of theoretical work in class, and applied analysis like this has helped me decide I want to work on clinical trials. I wouldn\u2019t have thought so before.<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014 <em>Charlotte Roiger \u201918<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Statistics and mathematical science students also engage with big data through St. Olaf\u2019s Center for Interdisciplinary Research.
