{"id":1233,"date":"2015-04-19T22:29:37","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T03:29:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/?page_id=1233"},"modified":"2023-08-10T09:50:06","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T14:50:06","slug":"hw-how-to-decide-if-your-waste-is-hazardous","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/hw-how-to-decide-if-your-waste-is-hazardous\/","title":{"rendered":"HW &#8211; How to Determine if Your Waste is Hazardous"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>Go to the University of Minnesota <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hsrm.umn.edu\/department-environmental-health-safety\/regulated-waste\/chemical-waste-registry-searchable-database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chemical Waste Registry Searchable Database<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0where you will use the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/hw-the-drum-designator-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drum Designation Code (DDC)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Type in<\/strong> either the <strong>Chemical Name<\/strong> or <strong>CAS<\/strong> (Chemical Abstract Services) Number and click on \u201cSearch.\u201d \u00a0 Typing the first few letters of the name will return matches from which you can choose.<\/li>\n<li>In the Search Results, look\u00a0under the &#8220;DDC&#8221; column.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;xxNH&#8221; &#8212;<\/strong>\u00a0If the DDC contains any two numbers followed by the letters &#8220;NH&#8221; (i.e., 05NH), then the\u00a0substance is considered nonhazardous and can generally can be disposed down the sewer or in the trash as nonhazardous waste; however, please first consult with the stockroom manager or CHO before disposing of such items.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If the DDC includes anything except the \u201cxxNH\u201d designation, then the waste<\/strong> <strong>is hazardous waste.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If your waste is a mixture of chemicals, and if at least one of the original chemicals does not contain the \u201cxxNH\u201d designation, then the combined substance is considered to be hazardous waste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> as the individual who has\u00a0received off-campus training in the identification and management of hazardous waste, <em>the <\/em><em>Chemical Hygiene Officer is\u00a0the only individual who makes a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">final<\/span> determination if chemicals used in the academic setting are considered hazardous waste<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Go to the University of Minnesota Chemical Waste Registry Searchable Database\u00a0where you will use the\u00a0Drum Designation Code (DDC).
