height: 4px; color: #ffffff; border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"4\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<p><strong>RNS 253, 396, and 441:<\/strong><\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030a02\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Features &amp; Functions&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Features &amp; Functions<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030a02\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Each Stockroom houses a Prep Area and variety of lab resources including Disposables, Chemicals, General Supplies, and Equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Stockroom Student Worker hours are listed on hall\u00a0doors.<\/li>\n<li>Elevator access (for Authorized Personnel with Ole Card access) for easy transfer of supplies and chemicals to\/from storage areas, loading dock, or other floors.<\/li>\n<li>The table below\u00a0lists the spaces supported by each\u00a0Stockroom, as well as the permanent\u00a0support equipment found in each Stockroom:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/files\/2016\/04\/StockroomComparisonsColor.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2866\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"2866\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/stockrooms\/rns-253-396-441\/stockroomcomparisonscolor\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/files\/2016\/04\/StockroomComparisonsColor.jpeg\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1801\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.2&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;iPhone 6s&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1460028482&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;4.15&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;25&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.033333333333333&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"StockroomComparisonsColor\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/files\/2016\/04\/StockroomComparisonsColor-1024x720.jpeg\" class=\" wp-image-2866 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/files\/2016\/04\/StockroomComparisonsColor-300x211.jpeg\" alt=\"StockroomComparisonsColor\" width=\"483\" height=\"340\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030b02\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Stockroom Access&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Stockroom Access<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030b02\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Authorized Individuals\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faculty, Staff, and Stockroom-Assigned\u00a0Student Stockroom Workers<\/strong> are allowed in RNS 253, 396, and 441.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teaching Assistants<\/strong>\u00a0are allowed in\u00a0are allowed in RNS 253, 396, and 441 during their course times (plus an hour before\/after).<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Research Students<\/strong> must be accompanied by his\/her faculty supervisor to enter RNS 253, 396, and 441.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030b53\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Using the RNS 253\/396\/441 Stockrooms&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Using the RNS 253\/396\/441 Stockrooms<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030b53\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Follow all safety\u00a0rules, including proper dress code and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Housekeeping Etiquette.<\/strong>\u00a0 These\u00a0rooms\u00a0can be heavy traffic zones for people. \u00a0Please try to keep this space as uncluttered as possible.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dirty Dishes:\u00a0<\/strong>put by the designated\u00a0sink (this area is\u00a0taped off and marked in each stockroom), and Student Workers will wash and return items to their home in the Stockroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finding Items.<\/strong>\u00a0 Please utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quartzy.com\/login\">Quartzy.com<\/a> (online inventory) and\/or use the 3-ring Inventory Binder that is located\u00a0by the prep bench\u00a0to search for items.\n<ul>\n<li>The shelves and drawers in the stockroom are labeled alphanumerically starting at the south door.<\/li>\n<li>Inventory will give you a shelf location in a number or number letter sequence; 11G, for example.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Can&#8217;t Find Something?<\/strong>\u00a0 What if you can\u2019t find something, even though it was listed in the inventory and you found the correct shelf number?\n<ul>\n<li>Look on the Check-Out Sheets, as that item may be a limited resource and someone else may already have checked-out that item for his\/her lab down the hall; contact that person directly to see if you can\u00a0work out a return time or share that item with them.\n<ul>\n<li>Contact the Stockroom Manager to see if it would be worth getting more of that particular item to eliminate\u00a0future situations like this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Contact the Stockroom Manager if you would like to see a certain supply item added to the space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whiteboard.<\/strong> \u00a0The purpose of the whiteboard in this room is to write down depleted disposable items or disposable items that are low in supply.\n<ul>\n<li>Using the whiteboard expedites the restock of that item listed. \u00a0The Stockroom Manager restocks items a few times per week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carts.<\/strong>\u00a0 We have many carts available for use in these stockrooms.\n<ul>\n<li>Return carts to their designated stockroom (this is labeled on each cart).<\/li>\n<li>As a courtesy towards others do not get in the habit of storing items on carts for long periods of time; please try to return the cart within 24 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030ba2\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Checking Out &amp; Returning Supplies&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Checking Out &amp; Returning Supplies<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030ba2\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Checking Out Items. \u00a0<\/strong>All items taken from the stockroom must be recorded on a\u00a0Check-Out Sheet.\n<ul>\n<li>There are check-out sheets hanging on the Stockroom hall\u00a0doors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Returning Items. \u00a0<\/strong>When you return an item, please mark the &#8220;Returned&#8221; box on the Check-out Sheet.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Items from the Stockroom that\u00a0You Previously Checked Out and are now Returning.<\/strong> \u00a0Return the item to the same\u00a0location from which you took it, and fill out the \u201cReturn Date\u201d column on the Check-Out Sheet. \u00a0<strong>If you do not remember where it goes<\/strong>, then either:\n<ul>\n<li>Utilize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quartzy.com\/login\">Quartzy.com<\/a> (online inventory) or\u00a0the 3-ring Inventory Binder to find the proper shelf location.<\/li>\n<li>Leave it on the counter (with a &#8220;Returned to Stockroom&#8221; note) for the Stockroom Worker or Manager.\n<ul>\n<li>We do not want items to get \u2018lost\u2019 by being returned to a location other than what is\u00a0already listed in the inventory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Items from\u00a0Your Lab That You No Longer Need and are Bringing to the Stockroom.<\/strong> \u00a0Leave item on the counter top with a note that informs the Stockroom personnel\u00a0what to do with the item.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dirty Glassware\/Supplies.<\/strong>\u00a0 If dirty when returning, then place by the designated\u00a0sink (this area is\u00a0taped off and marked in each stockroom) and\u00a0Student Workers will\u00a0wash and return the items\u00a0to their\u00a0designated home in the Stockroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030be2\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Broken Equipment&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Broken Equipment<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030be2\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>If you notice a piece of equipment is not working properly in a\u00a0Stockroom or in a Lab:\n<ul>\n<li>Let the Stockroom Manager know, and convey as much information as possible about what is not working and how time sensitive the equipment repair is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Stockroom Manager will take a look and attempt repair when time allows.<\/li>\n<li>An outside company repair person may be necessary and take time.<\/li>\n<li>Please understand that funding often needs to be worked out before a repair can be made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030c1c\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Checking Out Chemicals&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Checking Out Chemicals<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030c1c\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>All chemicals taken from the 253\/396\/441 Stockrooms must be recorded on the Check-Out Sheets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring a bucket<\/strong>, or a tray on a cart, to transport chemicals. \u00a0<strong>A<\/strong><strong>ll appropriate PPE<\/strong> must be worn while transporting chemicals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Faculty, Staff, and approved <em>***Student Stockroom Workers****<\/em> are the ONLY individuals who can remove chemicals from these\u00a0stockrooms.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0stock bottles must not be removed from the Stockrooms.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer the amount needed from the stock bottle to a smaller bottle\/jar; return the stock bottle to its proper location.<\/li>\n<li>Label this new secondary container with the chemical name and appropriate GHS pictogram.<\/li>\n<li>Record the amount taken on the Check-Out Sheet.<\/li>\n<li>If the stock bottle has been\u00a0emptied or there is only a small amount left in the bottle, tell the Stockroom Manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Students<\/strong>\u00a0are not allowed to take chemicals out of the 253\/396\/441 Stockrooms for the following reasons.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Safety Reasons:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>We do not want chemicals in the hands of individuals who have no reason to be in possession of them.<\/li>\n<li>It is important that a person who uses a hazardous chemical is trained in the potential dangers associated with its use.<\/li>\n<li>Limited access helps us to better contain the &#8220;What if&#8221; questions of potential accidents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lab Preparation:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>With locked and limited access Stockrooms there\u00a0is a lower\u00a0likelihood of chemicals\u00a0being misplaced, which in turn allows for more efficient use of time when people are looking for\u00a0items needed for their lab prep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030c73\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Autoclaves&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Autoclaves<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030c73\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Before using an autoclave you MUST receive hands-on training. \u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Contact the Biology<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Stockroom Manager for training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Pans, bags, gloves, tape, and other autoclave specific items are located in drawers #2, 3, 4 (RNS 396) or under the whiteboard (RNS 441).<\/li>\n<li>Fill out the Autoclave Use Sheet every\u00a0time the unit is run. \u00a0The sheet is located on a clipboard next to the unit.<\/li>\n<li>Problems? \u00a0Contact the Stockroom Manager directly with autoclave concerns\/repair needs, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid using the autoclave after 5pm unless it is absolutely necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030cae\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Hazardous Waste&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Hazardous Waste<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030cae\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Detailed instructions for how to accumulate, label, store, and remove\u00a0of your Hazardous Waste are <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/hw-instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Hazardous Waste stickers and blank manifests are located next to the RNS 253 &amp; 441 fume hoods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waste Containers.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Large\u00a0waste containers (20L or 4L) can be obtained from the RNS 341 Stockroom, from the shelf near the elevator.<\/li>\n<li>Small waste containers (&lt; 4L) can be found in the compact shelving. \u00a0Use only containers that have a screw-top lid;\u00a0corks or parafilm wrap do\u00a0not ensure a secure seal should the container tip over and therefore are\u00a0not allowed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once the container is full.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Required Information on Waste Containers.<\/strong> \u00a0Make sure that all waste bottles have a (1) hazardous waste sticker, (2) filled-out waste manifest, and (3) bottle collection code. \u00a0You can obtain a bottle collection code from the Stockroom Managers or the CHO.<\/li>\n<li>Contact the Chemical Hygiene Officer for waste removal, or:\n<ul>\n<li>Small\u00a0waste containers (&lt;4L): Bring to either the\u00a0RNS 253 or 441 hood.<\/li>\n<li>Large waste containers\u00a0(4L; 20L carboys): Bring to RNS 341 and place them on the labeled shelves by the elevator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-Chemical\u00a0Wastes<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Dead batteries. \u00a0<\/strong>Place these in the designated bucket in the RNS 253 or 441 fume hood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electronic waste.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Place dead lightbulbs, etc. in the designated tray in the RNS 253 or 441 fume hood.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sharps.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Place these in the red Sharps\u00a0Container located in the fume hood in RNS 253 or 441, or in RNS 396 against the back wall.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Broken Glass.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Place in the Broken Glass Boxes located in\u00a0RNS 253, 396, and 441.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4d22030cea\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Other Questions about RNS 253, 396, or 441?&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Other Questions about RNS 253, 396, or 441?<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4d22030cea\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Please contact Wade Schulz, Stockroom Manager, via email at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:schulz3@stolaf.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schulz3<wbr \/>@stolaf.edu<\/a>;
