{"id":2927,"date":"2016-04-26T13:16:02","date_gmt":"2016-04-26T18:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/?page_id=2927"},"modified":"2023-06-07T08:12:19","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T13:12:19","slug":"rns-341","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/stockrooms\/rns-341\/","title":{"rendered":"RNS 341 Stockroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><h6><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/stockrooms-universal-rules-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rules &amp;\u00a0Policies for all Stockrooms<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 before using RNS 341 please read and heed<code><\/code><\/h6>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%; height: 4px; color: #ffffff; border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"4\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<p><strong>RNS 341:<\/strong><\/p>\n<span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce50f94\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Features &amp; Functions&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Features &amp; Functions<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce50f94\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Holds a store of Disposable Supplies, General Supplies, and Equipment used mostly for Chemistry teaching labs and research.<\/li>\n<li>Houses 341A, which serves as the main chemical storage area.<\/li>\n<li>Hazardous Waste Satellite Accumulation Area.<\/li>\n<li>Stockroom Window; which is staffed by Student Workers during Chemistry lab times.<\/li>\n<li>Attached to RNS 323, the Biology and Chemistry Stockroom Managers\u2019 Office.<\/li>\n<li>Elevator access (for Authorized Personnel with Ole Card access) for easy transfer of supplies and chemicals to\/from storage areas, loading dock, or other floors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Serves as the primary work space for the Chemistry Stockroom Manager for the preparation of the Chemistry teaching labs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce51058\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Stockroom Access&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Stockroom Access<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce51058\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Access to RNS 341 &amp; 341A are limited to Authorized Individuals.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Faculty, Staff, and RNS 341 Student Stockroom Workers<\/strong> are allowed in RNS 341.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research Students<\/strong> must be accompanied by his\/her faculty supervisor to enter RNS 341.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce510a6\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Using the Stockroom&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Using the Stockroom<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce510a6\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Follow all safety rules, including proper dress code and PPE.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid the disruption of normal stockroom activities by being respectful of stockroom staff time and by seeking permission to use equipment, rather than assuming its availability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carts.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Black Carts. The black carts are\u00a0for faculty use.<\/li>\n<li>Gray Carts. \u00a0The gray carts are used for laboratory prep; please do not take\u00a0without asking the Stockroom Manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>No Chemicals in Stockroom Managers&#8217; Office.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0If you are bringing chemicals to the Stockroom Managers for any reason, please place the chemicals in RNS 341 before entering the Stockroom Managers&#8217; office.<\/li>\n<li>If the Stockroom Managers are not in the office, do not leave buckets or chemical bottles sitting in the hallway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The chemicals in RNS 341A are closely monitored for the following reasons. \u00a0<\/strong>Please keep them in mind when checking out chemicals from this space.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Safety Reasons.<\/strong> \u00a0We do not want chemicals in the hands of individuals who have no reason to be in possession of them. \u00a0It is important that a person who uses a hazardous chemical is trained in the potential dangers associated with its use<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lab Preparation.<\/strong> \u00a0Most of the chemicals stored in RNS 341A are used in the preparation of the chemistry teaching labs. The stockroom manager needs to have the assurance that the chemical is there when the time comes to prepare an experiment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce510e7\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Checking Out Supplies\/Equipment&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Checking Out Supplies\/Equipment<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce510e7\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>All items taken from the stockroom must be recorded on a\u00a0Check-Out Sheet.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>There are check-out sheets hanging\u00a0near the Stockroom Window and both hall doors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disposable Items<\/strong> and <strong>General Supplies<\/strong> can be checked out any time the window is open.\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty may access the stockroom at any time to check-out items, but it must be recorded on the check-out sheets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Equipment<\/strong> like hotplates, balances, and pH meters should be requested through the Chemistry Stockroom Manager.\n<ul>\n<li>If the Stockroom Manager is unavailable, Faculty may check-out equipment but it must be recorded on the check-out sheets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Equipment items that are checked out of the stockroom are not meant to remain in a research space for an extended length of time.<\/strong> \u00a0The Stockroom Manager may request that they be returned by a given date.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Any items marked with a red dot<\/strong> <strong>must not be taken from the stockroom without prior approval<\/strong> from the Stockroom Manager. \u00a0These are items used often in laboratory preparation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce51124\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Checking Out Chemicals&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Checking Out Chemicals<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce51124\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IMPORTANT!! \u00a0<\/strong>If you do not fully understand the hazards associated with a given chemical then do not handle\u00a0the chemical.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All chemicals taken from the stockroom must be recorded on the Check-Out Sheets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring a bucket<\/strong>, or a tray on a cart, to transport chemicals. \u00a0<strong>A<\/strong><strong>ll appropriate PPE<\/strong> must be worn while transporting chemicals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Faculty<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Preferred Option: \u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill\u00a0in the relevant information in the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/a\/stolaf.edu\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeMVzM0DTiYNY2Ia8Gdg124ywFlETEsgACMTWRV4AKp-8UB5A\/viewform?c=0&amp;w=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online Chemical Request Form<\/a> and &#8220;Send&#8221;\u00a0it to the Chemistry\u00a0Stockroom Manager.<\/li>\n<li>Alternatively, send an email request or contact the Stockroom Manager in person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondary Option:<\/strong> Faculty may enter the stockroom to check out chemicals from RNS 341A.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The stock bottles must not be removed from RNS 341<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Transfer the amount needed from the stock bottle to a small bottle\/jar (i.e., the Secondary Container).<\/li>\n<li>Label this new Secondary Container with the chemical name and <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/ghs-labeling-requirements-in-rns-laboratories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appropriate GHS pictogram<\/a>\u00a0(get this info from the stock bottle or the SDS).<\/li>\n<li>Record the amount taken\u00a0on the Check-Out Sheet that is hanging from the hall door (don&#8217;t forget to also record that you took a\u00a0secondary container\u00a0and lid).<\/li>\n<li>Return the stock bottle to its proper location.<\/li>\n<li>If the stock bottle has been\u00a0emptied or there is only a small amount left in the bottle, please tell\/email the Stockroom Manager (as an example, 10 mg remaining in a 50 mg bottle of an infrequently-used chemical, or 200 ml remaining in a 4 L bottle, would qualify as &#8220;a small amount left&#8221;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Authorized Students<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Supervisors must add their Students\u2019 names to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/19H68Jn9LGIbeYQ2wEY8MFGaCuDHEBiFFXe333gqx-bk\/edit#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RNS 341 Window Access Form<\/a><\/strong>, and those names will be cross-checked with the Chemical Hygiene Officer to ensure that they have had safety training before they are able to check out chemicals from the Stockroom Window.<\/li>\n<li>Chemistry Lab Teaching Assistants can request (course-specific) prepared chemicals and solutions at the Stockroom Window during their lab times.<\/li>\n<li>Research Students may request the following pre-approved\u00a0chemicals at the Stockroom Window:\n<ul>\n<li>Acetone (\u2264 3 L)<\/li>\n<li>Ethanol (\u2264 2 L)<\/li>\n<li>Methanol (\u2264 1 L)<\/li>\n<li>Sodium Chloride (\u2264 500 g)<\/li>\n<li>Sodium Bicarbonate\u00a0(\u2264 500 g)<\/li>\n<li>Potassium Phosphates\u00a0(\u2264 500 g)<\/li>\n<li>Magnesium Sulfate\u00a0(\u2264 100 g)<\/li>\n<li>Soda Ash (\u2264 500 g)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If an Authorized Student requests a chemical that does not appear on the pre-approved list, the request will be given to the Stockroom Manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce5115e\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Returning Items&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Returning Items<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce5115e\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Items from the Stockroom that\u00a0You Previously Checked Out and are now Returning<\/strong>. \u00a0Return item to the same\u00a0location from which you took it, and fill out the \u201cReturn Date\u201d column on the Check-Out Sheet. \u00a0If you do not know where to place the returned item then leave it on the center counter top with a note that informs the Stockroom personnel that this item is being returned.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Items from\u00a0Your Lab That You No Longer Need and are Bringing to the Stockroom<\/strong>. \u00a0Leave item on the center counter top with a note that informs the Stockroom personnel\u00a0what to do with the item.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dirty Glassware.<\/strong> \u00a0Place in the wash bins that are located across from the west sink.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chemicals.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>If you checked out a chemical from RNS 341 and used the entire amount, return the secondary container to the Stockroom to be reused.<\/li>\n<li>If you checked out a chemical from RNS 341 and did not use the entire amount, return the bottle to the Stockroom. \u00a0Place the bottle on the bench in the Stockroom and communicate with the Stockroom Manager that you are finished using it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Broken Items.<\/strong> \u00a0If you are leaving an item on a\u00a0stockroom bench to be fixed or discarded, please attach a note including instructions and your name (e.g., \u201cbroken\u201d is not a useful description \u2014 please\u00a0describe why\/how it is broken, and if it\u00a0should be discarded or repaired).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce51196\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;RNS 341 Window Etiquette&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>RNS 341 Window Etiquette<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce51196\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stockroom Window hours<\/strong> are posted on the window and doors.\u00a0 Please make your requests during the posted hours.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you lab is locked.<\/strong>\u00a0 Do not make a request at the window to have a lab door opened for you (Stockroom Workers do not have lab keys so they are unable to unlock doors for you).\u00a0 Please find your professor or the Stockroom Manager.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Before requesting chemicals<\/strong> at the window:\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure you know the quantities that are needed.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a bucket or cart.\u00a0 Chemicals will not be given out unless secondary containment is used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>When requesting items<\/strong> at the window:\n<ul>\n<li>Tell the Stockroom Worker your name and what class\/research lab you\u2019re from.\u00a0 Be prepared to show your student ID to verify that you are authorized to receive chemicals from the stockroom.<\/li>\n<li>While the Stockroom\u00a0is locating the items you need; fill out the Check-Out Sheet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>For classes with independent projects:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare a list of needed stockroom items before you come to RNS 341.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0staff may not be able to fill those requests on the spot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promptly return items to the Stockroom<\/strong>\u00a0so that they are available for others to use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><br class=\"none\" \/><br class=\"none\" \/><span class=\"collapseomatic arrowleft\" id=\"id69e4ccce511cd\"  tabindex=\"0\" title=\"&lt;strong&gt;Hazardous Waste&lt;\/strong&gt;\"    ><strong>Hazardous Waste<\/strong><\/span><div id=\"target-id69e4ccce511cd\" class=\"collapseomatic_content \">\n<ul>\n<li>Instructions for how to accumulate, label, store, and remove\u00a0of your Hazardous Waste are <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/hw-instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Hazardous Waste Satellite Accumulation Area is located near the elevator in RNS 341.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waste Containers. \u00a0<\/strong>Large\u00a0waste containers (20L or 4L), hazardous waste stickers, and blank manifests\u00a0can be found on the top shelf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Required Information on Waste Containers.<\/strong> \u00a0Before bringing items to\u00a0the RNS 341\u00a0Hazardous Waste Satellite Accumulation Area, make sure that all waste bottles have a hazardous waste sticker and a filled-out waste manifest before they are placed on the shelves.<\/li>\n<li>There are designated spots for different types of waste.\n<ul>\n<li>Electronic waste<\/li>\n<li>Sharps containers<\/li>\n<li>Batteries<\/li>\n<li>Liquid waste<\/li>\n<li>Solid
