Measures"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>A Control Measure is an action aimed to eliminate a hazard or at least reduce the risk of exposure to an acceptable level.\u00a0 The Hierarchy of Controls prioritizes control measures based on the premise that if the hazard you&#8217;ve identified can&#8217;t be eliminated then follow the\u00a0Hierarchy of Controls\u00a0to select the next-best control to mitigate the risk of an accident, incident, injury, or near-miss in the laboratory.\u00a0 The following guidelines have been adopted from wording found on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acs.org\/content\/acs\/en\/about\/governance\/committees\/chemicalsafety\/hazard-assessment\/fundamentals\/control-measures.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Control Measures<\/a>\u201d webpage of the American Chemical Society Committee on Chemical Safety.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4510\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4510\" data-name=\"column_content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Elimination and Substitution<\/strong> are considered the most effective control measures. \u00a0They are easiest to achieve for brand new processes. \u00a0They can be more difficult to implement for existing processes, because new and\/or more expensive equipment and materials may be required.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completely get rid of chemicals, materials, processes, and equipment that are unnecessary to your specific experiment. Check if your equipment is well-worn; check dates, and refer to manufacturer&#8217;s recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Switch out processes, equipment, material, or other components, where applicable. Think about the amount of chemicals or potentially hazardous materials you are using. Can you reduce the amount and still achieve the desired result? Shielding provides protection from potential slashes, flying objects, explosions, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ventilation.<\/strong>\u00a0 Use <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/engineering-controls-fume-hoods-and-other-safety-equipment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fume hoods, exhaust ducts,<\/a> and biosafety cabinets to reduce the risk of overexposure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- .site-grid__col exposure to the hazard by ensuring that the individual follows safe lab protocols. \u00a0Following are examples of administrative controls:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow all<strong> Standard Operating Procedures<\/strong> and the <strong>Laboratory Housekeeping Checklist.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Provide proper <strong>Training and Information<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct a <strong>Jobs Hazard Analysis<\/strong> prior to the start of a procedure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exposure Limits<\/strong>. \u00a0Achieved by observing both the concentration and time exposed to a harmful chemical or physical agent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- .site-grid__col data-name=\"column_content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Even though the Hierarchy of Control Measures indicates that PPE is the least effective control measure, it should absolutely be used in case other control measures fail. \u00a0The success of PPE depends in part on whether or not lab workers actually use it properly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All laboratory personnel (students and employees) must wear <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/personal-protective-equipment-ppe-personal-apparel-and-hygiene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proper personal attire and PPE<\/a> when working in a laboratory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!--
