{"id":8,"date":"2013-02-28T20:51:45","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T20:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/chemical-hygiene-plan\/chp-cover\/"},"modified":"2026-10-05T10:36:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T15:36:07","slug":"chp-cover","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/chp-cover\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemical Hygiene Plan and Laboratory Safety Manual"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>All FNSM employees<br \/>who spend any time in a laboratory<br \/>must read and understand this Manual<br \/>before<br \/>working in a Laboratory, or with or near chemicals<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere hazardous chemicals as defined by this standard are used in the workplace, the employer shall develop and carry out the provisions of a written <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemical-hygiene\/files\/2021\/04\/CHEMICAL-HYGIENE-PLAN-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chemical Hygiene Plan<\/a> which is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Capable of protecting employees from health hazards associated with hazardous chemicals in that laboratory and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capable of keeping exposures below the limits specified [in 29 CFR part 1910, subpart Z].\u201d\u00a0 29 CFR 1910.1450(e)(1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Chemical Hygiene Plan shall be readily available to employees, employee representatives and, upon request, to the [OSHA] Assistant Secretary.\u201d&nbsp; 29 CFR 1910.1450(e)(2)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong> This manual is intended for use by FNSM employees who work in Regents Hall of Natural Sciences.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Academic-related employees who work in the Center for Art and Dance\u00a0or Speech Theater must follow the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/depts\/art\/safety\/\">Art Safety Manual<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Facilities personnel must follow the policies and guidelines outlined in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ehs\/right-to-know-hazard-communication\/\">Hazard Communication Program<\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Implemented:&nbsp;<\/em> January 1991<br \/><em>Last Updated:<\/em>&nbsp; August 2024<br \/><em>Updated by:<\/em><br \/>Dr. Patrick A.
