In order to undertake the process of attaining departmental distinction, a student must<\/p>\n

> \u00a0 \u00a0 be a declared chemistry major
\n> \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0have a chemistry course GPA of 3.00 or greater
\n> \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0have an overall GPA of 3.00 or greater
\n> \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0have junior or senior standing<\/p>\n

In order to be certified with Departmental Distinction in Chemistry, a student must<\/p>\n

> \u00a0 \u00a0finish the chemistry major and other graduation requirements
\n> \u00a0\u00a0 maintain a chemistry course GPA of 3.00 or greater
\n> \u00a0\u00a0 maintain an overall GPA of 3.00 or greater<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The process of gaining Departmental Distinction in Chemistry is a formative, rather than summative process.\u00a0 Students are expected to progress through the required elements in a manner that involves considerable learning at each step.\u00a0 The student seeking distinction works with their distinction mentor on each element of the process.\u00a0 Improving the student’s ability to communicate science effectively is one of the primary goals of the distinction process.<\/p>\n

Various aspects of the distinction process are described at the links below.<\/p>\n

The required elements of the distinction process:
\n1. Participation in an experiential learning activity or project<\/a>.
\n2. Production of a formal paper<\/a> describing the project, usually in journal format.
\n3.\u00a0Oral presentation of the paper to a small committee of faculty<\/a>.
\n4.\u00a0Public\u00a0oral presentation<\/a> of the work.<\/p>\n
