{"id":582,"date":"2015-09-26T10:59:08","date_gmt":"2015-09-26T15:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemistry\/?page_id=582"},"modified":"2015-09-26T21:50:29","modified_gmt":"2015-09-27T02:50:29","slug":"oral-presentation-to-faculty-committee","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemistry\/information-for-current-chemistry-majors\/earning-distinction-in-chemistry\/oral-presentation-to-faculty-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Oral Presentation to Faculty Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>The distinction candidate works with the department to select a three-member faculty committee. \u00a0If the distinction project is interdisciplinary, one faculty member with appropriate expertise from another department may be included in the committee. \u00a0The chair of this committee is the candidate&#8217;s project mentor. \u00a0When the distinction candidate and mentor are reasonably satisfied with the paper, a current draft is submitted to this faculty committee.\u00a0 The candidate\u00a0works with the faculty members to determine a date and time (usually about one hour in length) for the committee to ask questions about the work, and to make comments or suggest changes to the paper.\u00a0 This meeting may begin with the student offering a brief oral synopsis of the work.\u00a0 The paper draft must be submitted to committee members in a timely fashion to allow at least one week to read the paper before the committee meeting.\u00a0These meetings represent\u00a0an opportunity for the candidate to serve\u00a0as the principal authority on the subject of the work.<\/p>\n<p>At the close of the presentation, the candidate is asked to step out of the room while the committee briefly considers two aspects of the candidates presentation: \u00a0the knowledge displayed by the candidate about the work, and the paper itself. \u00a0Upon achieving consensus, the committee invites the candidate back into the room and offers feedback on the\u00a0candidate&#8217;s\u00a0performance. \u00a0There is often, at this time, a request for further edits to the paper.<\/p>\n<p>A final draft of the paper is prepared by the candidate\u00a0and signed and dated by each of the committee members.\u00a0 Final drafts are kept on file in the chemistry department office.\u00a0 Final drafts must be signed, dated and submitted to the Chemistry Department Chair prior to the advertised\u00a0deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Various aspects of the distinction process are described at the links below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemistry\/?page_id=570&amp;preview=true\" target=\"_blank\">Qualifications<\/a> necessary for pursuing distinction.<\/p>\n<p>The required elements of the distinction process:<br \/>\n1. Participation in an <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chemistry\/?page_id=576&amp;preview=true\" target=\"_blank\">experiential learning activity or project<\/a>.<br \/>\n2.
