{"id":175,"date":"2017-10-11T15:52:08","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T20:52:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chinese\/?page_id=175"},"modified":"2024-04-18T14:11:41","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T19:11:41","slug":"chinese-language","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chinese\/chinese-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>To fulfill a Chinese major, students will demonstrate both linguistic and cultural competence.<\/p>\n<h4>Requirements for the Chinese Major<\/h4>\n<p>The major consists of\u00a0<strong>nine<\/strong> courses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Four<\/strong> core language courses:\n<ul>\n<li>CHIN 231: Intermediate Chinese I<\/li>\n<li>CHIN 232: Intermediate Chinese II<\/li>\n<li>CHIN 301: Third-Year Chinese I<\/li>\n<li>CHIN 302: Third-Year Chinese II<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>One<\/strong> language course above CHIN 302, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>CHIN 320: Special Topics in Chinese<\/li>\n<li>CHIN 351 Chinese Language and Society through the Media<\/li>\n<li>CHIN 360: Professional Chinese<\/li>\n<li>An equivalent course taken during an approved study abroad language program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four<\/strong> courses, taught in English, focused on China\/Chinese language and culture:\n<ul>\n<li>At least one must examine transnationalism\/regionalism\/global perspectives<\/li>\n<li>At least one must be 300-level<\/li>\n<li>No more than one may be 100-level<\/li>\n<li>One may be an Independent Study or an Asian Studies senior seminar (ASIAN 397 and ASIAN 399)<\/li>\n<li>The Asian Conversations sequence (ASIAN 210, 215\/216, 220) may count for no more than two<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/asian-studies\/files\/2020\/10\/Chinese-Major-Planning-Worksheet-1.pdf\">attached worksheet<\/a> for specific course requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>Additionally, Chinese majors are highly encouraged to spend a semester abroad on the <a href=\"http:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10101\">Term in China program, \u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction%3DPrograms.ViewProgram%26Program_ID%3D10270&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1549997799265000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFfTmLgCFc0nKV8-2vgrP9nlxr6tg\">Term in Taiwan<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10101\">\u00a0(Taipei and other cities)<\/a> or another <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/asian-studies\/student-abroad\/\">study abroad<\/a> option.<\/h5>\n<p><!-- begin-migrated-from-panel-builder --><!-- end-migrated-from-panel-builder --><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To fulfill a Chinese major, students will demonstrate both linguistic and cultural competence.
